2008 Conference USA Basketball Tournament Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on March 2, 2008

Not only has Memphis been the talk of Conference USA, it has been the talk of the entire country as the number one ranked team for a good portion of the season. Although Memphis is clearly the best team in this conference, could it be a certain Cinderella’s time to shine? Find out if Jimmy Boyd thinks anyone has a shot to win besides Memphis in this 2008 Conference USA tournament predictions article.

Conference USA tournament action kicks off on Wednesday March 12th and concludes Saturday March 15th. All games will be played in Memphis at the FedEx Forum – home of the Memphis Grizzlies. The opening round of the tournament is not televised. Televised action picks up with the quarterfinal round, but only on local networks. College Sports TV will air the semifinal matchups and CBS will air the championship game.

Memphis is the huge favorite to win the Conference USA tournament championship. The Tigers have won it each of the past two seasons and will essentially be playing at home with this tournament being played in Memphis. Memphis is 29-1 on the season with its only loss to, then number two ranked, Tennessee, and it is currently the number three ranked team in the country. The Tigers are a perfect 15-0 in Conference USA games, but a formidable opponent will have a shot to end its conference run in the last regular season game of the year. UAB is the team I’m referring to. The Blazers only lost by one point in the first meeting this season. UAB is 22-8 on the season and 12-3 in conference play. The Blazers are one of the few teams athletic enough to run up and down with the Tigers. I do expect Memphis to win this game at home after getting such a scare against UAB the first time around. Both UAB and Houston will be looking to knock Memphis off in the conference tourney as the teams with the best shots, but Memphis has something to prove and I don’t see anything getting in the way of that.

Memphis was already one of the more athletic and talented teams in the country in the 2006-2007 and added freshman sensation Derrick Rose to the mix. The 6’3’’ guard has proven that he can do it all for Coach Calipari. If Memphis is able to bring home a national championship, we can look at this kid as the difference maker.

2007 Recap:

When the Conference USA tourney hits, Memphis quits messing around. Memphis beat each of its three opponents in last year’s conference tournament by double digits to easily win its second conference tournament title in as many years. Winning the Conference USA tournament title secured Memphis with a number two seed in the Big Dance. Memphis reached the Elite Eight before going down to Greg Oden and the Buckeyes. It appears that Memphis has a number one seed locked up this year.

Previous Winners:

2007 – Memphis
2006 – Memphis
2005 – Louisville
2004 – Cincinnati
