2008 Crown Royal 400 Odds
NASCAR does Richmond this Saturday night on national television for the Crown Royal 400. This short track is sure to provide us with some bumper to bumper action that should have the caution flag waving throughout. Find out who Jimmy Boyd likes to take the checkered flag in this Crown Royal 400 odds and predictions article.
While Richmond is listed as a short track the key here is not to compare it to Bristol or Martinsville. I’ve discussed with you all before that drivers who run well at Phoenix and New Hampshire surprisingly run well at Richmond and that’s where we’ll take our cue this week.
The top running teams at Phoenix will bring their same cars to Richmond and we should see similar results. Jimmie Johnson collected his first win of the season at Phoenix a few weeks back and Johnson won both races at Richmond last year.
Johnson has not been as good as he was last season, but mostly just on the larger tracks where the Car of Tomorrow had not yet been tested. Hendrick cars have dominated Phoenix, Richmond, and New Hampshire, and we expect to see them contend for another win this week.
Johnson’s teammate, Jeff Gordon, finished fourth in both races at Richmond last season. He had a win at Phoenix and finished second at New Hampshire twice. So once again you see the damage that the Hendrick boys are doing on these tracks. However, Gordon traditionally hasn’t been at his best at Richmond, much to the delight of the Confederate crazies who cheer against him. In 30 career starts, he has just 16 top 10 finishes and has only won twice. It doesn’t sound like a total lack of success, but compared to his record at other tracks it is.
There are a few home state boys that drivers are going to have to watch out for this week. Those Virginians are Denny Hamlin and Jeff Burton. Hamlin has the third best average with his Gibbs Toyota on the three tracks behind Gordon and Johnson. Hamlin came away with a third place finish at Phoenix this season and sticks out this week because of his desire to win in front of a large fan base. Hamlin has already won at Martinsville this season and I expect him to take the checkered flag this week as this is a race he has had circled on his calendar since finishing 3rd and 6th on the track last year.
Jeff Burton currently leads in points, but I don’t expect him to hold anything back here. He hasn’t won in his home state in 10 years and you can bet he feels he’s long overdue.
Kyle Busch could be this week’s wild card. In six starts at Richmond, he has finished in the top five five times, including a second place finish behind Johnson in this race last year. Busch played second fiddle to his Hendrick teammates last season, not getting a win on any of the three tracks, but he won at New Hampshire in 2006 and at Phoenix in 2005. Richmond might just be next.
