2008 Fiesta Bowl Odds & Predictions

The 2008 Fiesta Bowl is once again sponsored by Tostitos and will take place on January 2nd, 2008 at 8 PM EST in Glendale, Arizona.  The game will be televised by FOX and it should be a good one as both Oklahoma and West Virginia were legit title contenders through the last few weeks of the season and both were favored to win every time they stepped on the field this season.  Last year this game was dubbed the game of the century by some as the undefeated Boise State Broncos upset the Sooners on a couple of miracle plays.  This game was definitely one of the best of the year with trick plays and great football all the way around.  Let's hope that this year's addition can fit the bill, and if you want to make a little money betting on the game like our followers did last year, then pick up Jimmy Boyd's college bowl picks package today.

Coming out of the gates we thought the Sooners were going to be the team to beat as they were putting up more than 60 ppg and routing everyone.  That all came to a halt when they overlooked Colorado and were upset, but they did battle back into the BCS picture at the end of the year until Texas Tech shot those hopes down.

One of the things that we love about the Oklahoma Sooners is the talent they have at quarterback in Sam Bradford.  He threw for 2,879 yards and 34 touchdowns while only being intercepted seven times, giving him a passer rating of 180.5.  The 34 scores were an NCAA record for freshman and he's a big reason for their success this season.  Of course he makes it look easy with four talented receivers and an offensive line that allowed him to be sacked only nine times this season.  At running back there is talent with Allen Patrick and Chris Brown sharing the load even though there top guy in DeMarco Murray has been lost for the season due to injury.  The defense isn't full of slouches by any means as the Sooners held opponents to 18.2 ppg and only 91.4 ypg on the ground, which matches up well against the Mountaineers.

How are the Mountaineers going to react to not being in the title game?  All they had to do was beat Pittsburgh as 28-point favorites to lock up their ticket to the title game, but an upset was in the making.  Now they lost their head coach as Rich Rodriguez bolted for Michigan and they'll have to do without him for this one.  The coaching staff and players have indicated that the team is going to be fine and that they wanted to make a BCS Bowl at the beginning of the year and playing in the Fiesta Bowl is an honor, but I guess we'll see how their mood is on the field.

Offensively West Virginia can really mjove the ball with both Pat White and Steve Slaton both rushing for more than 1,000 yards.  White has developed more of a passing game too, and a couple of speedy receivers keeps the opposition honest.  One problem the offense does have is turning the ball over as they lost the pigskin nine times in their two losses, but at least the Mountaineer defense generated 34 turnovers this year to even out the stats.  West Virginia should be able to get a little bit of pressure on Bradford, as they did take the opposing quarterback down 37 times this year, which was six more than all of last season.  The opposition is only throwing for 184 ypg even though they have faced the likes of Brian Brohm of Louisville and Ben Mauk of Cincinnati.
