2008 Goody’s Cool Orange 500 Odds
NASCAR hits the famous Martinsville Speedway Sunday March 30th for another blockbuster racing event and Jimmy Boyd is here to weigh in on the Goody’s Cool Orange 500 odds. Last week’s race at Bristol marked the first short-track run of the season and the boys will hit up another short-track this week. With the addition of Dale Earnhardt Jr. to Hendrick Motorsports this season, people were talking like this stacked team could take every single checkered flag. So far, they have not lived up to expectations as they are yet to take a checkered flag through five races. So the question on all of our minds is if this week will finally be the week?
If a Hendrick’s driver does get in the winner’s circle this week, it won’t be without heavy competition from Richard Childress Racing, which has really stepped up to the plate. This team dominated at Bristol last week taking the top three spots with Jeff Burton edging out teammates Kevin Harvick and Clint Bower. One has to like Childress Racing again this week with that kind of momentum spurring them on, but let’s not count out Hendrick’s All-Star team, as I think this is the week they get the job done. I normally don’t like to play favorites, but the evidence in favor of Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon is unmistakable.
This race couldn’t have come at a better time for Jimmy Johnson, who has struggled to start the season. He has been the king of Martinsville, winning the last three races at the track. Since 2002 when Johnson placed 35th in his rookie run at Martinsville, he had never finished outside the top 10. In Johnson’s last eight starts, he has finished in the top for all but one time. A good track history is a driver’s best friend and that will be heavily in Johnson’s favor here.
You just can’t count out Martinsville’s all-time money leader and its active win leader with seven victories at the famous track. Gordon has not finished outside the top five at Martinsville Speedway since 2004. The Michael Jordon of NASCAR has four wins since 2003 at the track. While some are concerned about Gordon’s performance at Bristol two weeks ago, a track where he normally runs well, I can assure you that no one is more concerned than Jeff Gordon himself and that will act as motivation to step it up this week.
Johnson and Gordon have combined to win eight of the last ten Martinsville races. To take anyone else is complete guesswork. While the odds aren’t the best, taking one of these two driver’s will give you the best chance to win and that’s what we’re looking for.
