2008 Heisman Predictions after Week 11

Written by Steve Janus

1.  Graham Harrell (QB, Texas Tech) – How can you not get behind Graham Harrell after his performance over Oklahoma State this week.  Harrell had ridiculous stats.  He completed 40 out of 50 passes for 456 yards, six touchdowns, and zero interceptions.  He leads all FBS quarterbacks with 4,077 yards and is among the tops in the nation in touchdowns, completion percentage and QB Rating.  With these stats alone Harrell would be near the top of the Heisman list no matter what, but the fact that he’s lead his team to an undefeated 10-0 record and scored huge wins against huge opponents, catapults him to the top of the list, and he’s starting to pull away from the pack.  Next week Harrell will be tested once again as the Red Raiders face maybe their toughest contest to date at Oklahoma.  Texas Tech’s string of games against Texas, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma is one of the most difficult of any team in the nation.  Harrell has led his team to victory in two of the three games, and if he can come through this stretch unscathed, he’s a lock to grab the coveted trophy.  He may not even need to notch a win this next week as he’s put together maybe the most impressive wins of anyone on this list.

2.  Colt McCoy (QB, Texas) – McCoy was in the lead in the Heisman race before the Longhorn’s loss to Texas Tech and Graham Harrell.  He grabs the second spot this week with a solid performance against Baylor his last time out.  McCoy didn’t have the monster numbers of Harrell, but he still completed 70 percent of his passes for 300 yards and 5 touchdowns, but threw two picks in the 45-21 win.  Colt has led his team to some impressive wins as well.  He helped beat Oklahoma in the Red River Shootout, then beat Missouri and Oklahoma State in back to back weeks.  McCoy should breach the 3,000 passing yards mark this week, it’s obviously not as impressive as Harrell, who is already over 4,000 yards, but McCoy obviously has less attempts than the Texas Tech QB because Colt is actually averaging more yards per attempt.  Also, his 78 percent completion rate is the best in the nation among quarterbacks with more than 300 pass attempts.  McCoy probably has the best chance to overcome Harrell for the top spot, but Harrell will need to help him out with a poor performance at Oklahoma this week.

3.  Sam Bradford (QB, Oklahoma) – Bradford gets a lot of credit for having such great stats besides sitting on the sideline for the second half of many of Oklahoma’s games.  Bradford is second only to Graham Harrell in passing yards with 3,406 and is first in all of college football with 38 touchdowns.  Bradford gets some guff for being a system guy, but make no bones about it, they guy is a great football player.

4.  Tim Tebow (QB, Florida) – Tim Tebow doesn’t have nearly the statistics of his Texas Tech or Texas counterparts, but that doesn’t really matter.  Tebow wins games for the Gators and after Florida’s destruction of Georgia two weeks ago, Tebow put himself right back into the Heisman picture.  One thing that sets Tebow apart from any of the other QBs on this list is his ability to find the endzone with his legs as well as his arm.  He only had 171 yards passing, but found the endzone 3 times through the air and added 88 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground last week against Vanderbilt.  Tebow also gets additional consideration because he is a past winner, but this is no charity, he deserves to be on this list.  This week Tebow’s Gators are 21 point favorites against South Carolina.

5. Chase Daniel (QB, Missouri) — Missouri might not be making any BCS Championship noise anymore, but Daniel deserves to be in the conversation for the Heisman trophy.  Daniel is a on a very good team and his numbers are some of the best in the nation.  He’s completing 76 percent of his passes and has 28 touchdowns to 10 interceptions this year.  I don’t think he can overcome the other quarterbacks on this list, but he is the 5th best on this list right now.  Unfortunately, this year there simply aren’t any standout position players that have leapfrogged Daniel at this point.
