With the college football season within spitting distance now, it’s time to take a look at the 2008 Heisman Trophy candidatesBetUS has listed defending Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow as the odds on favorite at +300.  There have not been too many repeat Heisman winners throughout history and with Florida expected to give Tim Tebow less carries to preserve his health, his chances aren’t nearly as good.  Jimmy Boyd takes a look at a few other candidates showing a lot better value that should not be ignored when making your 2008 Heisman Trophy predictions.

Graham Harrell – Texas Tech Red Raiders: +1000 to win at BetUS.com

With all the talk about Tim Tebow and Chase Daniel, this guys flies under the radar a little bit, but that should end in 2008.  The Red Raiders had the No. 1 ranked passing offense in the country in 2007, and now that the defense is rising to the challenge, Harrell could steal the show on a team that could win 10 games.  Harrell has posted gaudy numbers the past two seasons, passing for 10,260 yards and 86 touchdowns.  He also has one of the top receivers in the country to throw to in Michael Crabtree, also a Heisman candidate.  The Biletnikoff winner racked up almost 2,000 yards last season and caught 22 touchdown passes.  Having a guy like that to throw to helps Harrell’s chances even more.

Matt Grothe – South Florida Bulls: +5000 to win at BetUS.com

Pat White gets much of the QB attention in the Big East, but Matt Grothe could actually have a bigger season, and if he has a better team, he could be making a trip to New York.  South Florida finished 9-4 in 2007, but was ranked No. 2 in the nation at one point.  A showdown at West Virginia in the season finale between Grothe and White could determine which of these guys is in the running for the coveted award.  The Bulls could have the better offense as they return 10 off 11 starters.  Grothe led the Bulls in rushing (872 yards) and passing (2,670 yards) in 2007.  Because White has never had a 2,000-yard passing season, Grothe could have the edge, especially if his rushing yards make it to the 1,000-yard mark this season.

Chase Daniel – Missouri Tigers: +650 at BetUS.com

Daniel is not showing the value I normally like to get, but at +650 he is still listed at a decent price, especially for a Heisman finalist.  Making the trip and not coming back with the hardware cannot sit well for one of the nation’s top Q’s.  Also, a BCS-snub should have Daniel and the Tigers fired up more than ever.  Daniel was the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year in 2007 and there’s no reason he can’t repeat those honors.  Playing in the weaker Big 12 North and against a fairly light non-conference schedule should give Daniel a chance to rack up some big numbers. So if he performs well against the league’s elite, he should making another trip to New York.
