2008 John Deere Classic Predictions & Odds

Jimmy Boyd is back for another week's worth of PGA Tour handicapping with his 2008 John Deere Classic predictions. The John Deere Classic commenced in 1971 and has been an opportunistic event for lesser known golfers on the tour ever since. Last year's champion, Jonathan Byrd, and the 2006 champ, John Senden, are both listed at 33-1 odds to win the tournament. This little bit of recent history shows us that the big guns are going to have to bring their "A" game or another unknown will be running away with first prize. Just as he has all season long, Jimmy Boyd leaves you with three golfers he likes to be in that final group come Sunday.

It comes as no surprise that Perry is the overwhelming favorite to win the Classic at TPC at Deere Run, and we'll gladly make one of our wagers on him still showing solid value. Perry has won two of the last four tournaments he has played to reach fourth on the money list and third in FedEx Cup points. Without Tiger Woods and some of the other top golfers in the world, you can bet that Perry sees this tournament as a great opportunity to move up in the standings. Perry's well-rounded game has been the reason for his success. He's seventeenth in driving, tenth in green hit in regulation, and fiftieth in putting average. Perry is definitely worth your money this week.

Watson has an excellent shot at picking up his first win of the season this week and is showing great value for a guy that has played some solid golf in his day. Watson's level of play has really picked up over the past few weeks. He is coming off of a second place tie at the Buick Open and a sixth place draw at the Travelers Championship in his last two events played. Watson often relies on his long ball so we know he'll have that going for him. If he can work a little bit of magic with his putter, I have do doubt he'll be in that final group. When you weigh the field, Watson is one of the best out there at a great price.

It would be nice to hit with Watney here at 40-1 like we did with Sergio Garcia at The Players Championship. Watney is still a youngster at just 27 years of age and appears to be ready for his second career win this week. Much like our previous two champs, Watney is relatively unknown, but I happen to know that he is a very talented player. His biggest challenge will be consistently putting the ball in the fairway off the tee, but I don't see that as much of a problem with the way this course lays out.
