2008 MAC Basketball Tournament Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on March 3, 2008

Jimmy Boyd unveils his 2008 MAC tournament predictions in this article to give you a head start on handicapping this mid-major conference tournament.

Mid American Conference tournament action kicks off Wednesday March 12th and continues through Saturday March 15th at Quicken Loans Arena, home of Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in Cleveland, Ohio. Opening round action, the quarterfinals, and the semifinals are all still to be determined in regards to what stations they will be broadcast on, but we do know that the finals can be seen on ESPN on March 15th.

All 12 teams from the MAC get a shot to win this tournament and receive an automatic bid into the Big Dance, but Kent State is the clear favorite. The Golden Flashes won the MAC with a 13-3 record. They are 25-6 on the season and a perfect 16-0 in home games. Kent State should be seeing an automatic bid no matter what happens in the conference tourney.

Akron and West Michigan will be Kent’s biggest threats. Kent State swept Akron this season, but both games were close with the Flashes winning by six points at home and three on the road. With Western Michigan being on the other side of the conference, the Golden Flashes played the Broncos just one time and won that game by nine points. Toledo, Ohio, and Bowling Green were the three schools which were able to beat the Golden Flashes this season. Ohio is the only team of the three that I feel has a chance to do it again in the MAC tournament.

We are expecting to see a tournament filled with upsets as, outside of Kent State, most of the schools are right on top of each other record-wise in conference play. In fact, Miami Ohio completed a Cinderella run to win the tournament last season.

But while their might be some upsets over higher seeds along the way, I don’t see Kent State going down with the opportunity to improve their NCAA tournament seed. Since 1999 Kent State has won four MAC tournament titles and after missing out last season, I look for the Golden Flashes to return to the winners circle this year.

2007 Recap:

Cinderella’s slipper fit for last season’s MAC tournament champions. The Miami Ohio Redhawks knocked off number one seed Toledo in the semifinals and went on to be number two seeded Akron by one point in the championship game to earn an unlikely bid to the Big Dance.

Miami Ohio received a 14 seed in the NCAA tournament and were matched up with the Oregon Duck in the first round. Miami Ohio went toe to toe with the Ducks before losing a two-point thriller.

Previous Winners:

2007- Miami Ohio
2006 – Kent State
2005 – Ohio
2004 – Western Michigan
