New York Giants
The pressure is off head coach Tom Coughlin and
QB Eli Manning for now as they leaped off the
hot seat by winning the Super Bowl. Coughlin
does not have the makeup to let his team relax
and it won't take long for the New York fans to
turn on their team if the Giants don't produce.
This should be reason enough for New York to
stay hungry, that and the fact that they return
all of their offensive weapons and the best pass
rush in football. They'll miss the now retired
Michael Strahan but not enough that it costs
them the division.
2nd –
Dallas Cowboys
The Cowboys were the best team in the NFC in
2007 during the regular season. They laid an egg
in the playoffs for the second straight year
however. Tony Romo did enough early on to land
himself a big contract and to earn a second
straight trip the Pro Bowl, but it is worth
noting that he has struggled in December and
January the past two years. Drafting Arkansas
speedster Felix Jones should add another element
to the offense as he'll team with Marion Barber
for a thunder and lightning approach to the
running game. Like the Giants, this team has
talent in nearly every spot, but the difference
is that the Giants have a better pass rush and
that the Giants secondary, especially Roy
Williams, jas been more susceptible to giving up
the big play.
3rd –
Philadelphia Eagles
Head coach Andy Reid has foolishly said that he
thinks his team is capable of winning the Super
Bowl. This is going to be hard to do considering
that they are the third best team in the
division. QB Donovan McNabb's health is always a
concern, and it is a done deal that if he
doesn't deliver this season, he will have to
throw passes for another team. Wide
receiver-return man DeSean Jackson should add a
boost to the offense, but not enough to catapult
the Eagles to the top of the East.
4th –
Washington Redskins
The Redskins rallied around the tragic death of
Pro Bowl safety Sean Taylor to rattle off four
straight wins to close out the season to advance
to the playoffs. They'll still be competitive,
but they'll fall back down to reality this
season. Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts promise
to be one of the better running back duos in the
league, but QB Jason Campbell is still
inconsistent and it remains to be seen if he can
run Jim Zorn's West Coast offense. Redskins
great Joe Gibbs surprised the franchise when he
retired following last season. There is going to
be a natural adjustment period which will put
the Skins in the basement in a tough division.
