The Seahawks have brought home four straight NFC West titles and oddsmakers expect them to make it five straight following the 2008-09 season. Another division title would send the Seahawks to the playoffs for the sixth straight season. The team sought out to fix what was holding it back in 2007 – the running game. Just a couple season removed from an MVP campaign, Shaun Alexander proved to be all washed up. In comes Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett to give the Seahawks a thunder and lightning approach to the running game. Matt Hasselbeck remains one of the best passer in the league and is coming off another Pro Bowl season. The defense still flies under the radar, but it is now better than it has been during Seattle's reign at the top of the West.
Sleeper – St. Louis Rams: +500 to win NFC West at Sportsbook.com
The Rams could go from worst to first in 2008. Injuries plagued the entire 2007 season and a much healthier roster might just be able to get the job done. We can expect much better from Pro Bowl QB Marc Bulger. Injuries made him take his worst season as a pro. One of the best all-purpose backs in the game, Stephen Jackson, missed five games last season. That meant the Rams had no chance at winning five games. When he's on the field, St. Louis has a chance each and every week. The biggest area of concern is the defense line which hasn't been able to mount much of a pass rush. The team drafted defensive end Chris Long to change all that.
The betting line on the San Francisco 49ers is +500 to win the NFC West and it is +225 on the Arizona Cardinals. Like St. Louis, injuries held the 49ers back last season. Even so, the offense was brutal, averaging just 13.7 points per game. In comes Mike Martz to shake things up and it never takes him long. He has a talented running back in Frank Gore to center the offense around and I have no doubts that Alex Smith will improve with Martz calling the shots, just as Kurt Warner, Marc Bulger, and Jon Kitna did. With tough defensive end Justin Smith coming on board to team with Defensive Rookie of the Year Patrick Willis, this unit figures to be much stronger up front.
The Cards have more talented offensive skill players than any other team in this division, but they haven't been able to put it all together yet. Injuries and having to deal with competition from Kurt Warner hasn't been favorable to the growth process of Matt Leinart. History doesn't even come close to taking the side of the Cards as they have just winning season since 1988. Winning on the road figures to be a big problem again.
