2008 NFL Draft Predictions
Take a look at our NFL Draft Preview of
Picks 1-10, 11-20, and then finally
21-30
Jimmy Boyd has already given you the top 16 picks in Part One of his
2008 NFL Mock Draft. Now it’s
time to take a look at the rest of the first round in Part Two.
#17 Pick to Minnesota
Vikings – Chris Williams OT, Vanderbilt
There’s no question the Vikes have a need up front and I feel they’ll
take advantage of a deep offensive tackle class by nabbing Williams in
the middle of round one.
#18 Pick to Houston
Texans – Antoine Cason CB, Arizona
The Texas took a huge stride last season by finishing .500 for the first
time in franchise history. The defense is coming together, and adding a
top cover corner like Cason will shore it up even further.
#19 Pick to Philadelphia Eagles – Malcolm Kelly WR, Oklahoma
You’re probably thinking that it’s about time you saw a wideout on the
board. This year’s wide receiver class is not as deep as we have seen in
recent years, but Kelly is a playmaker with the potential to be a true
number one option and that’s what the Eagles are hoping for.
#20 Pick to Tampa Bay
Buccaneers – Jonathan Stewart RB, Oregon
With Cadillac Williams catching the injury bug all to often these days,
look for the Bucs to cover themselves by adding a guy who could emerge
as a feature back. Stewart fits the mold and could end up even better
than Mr. McFadden.
#21 Pick to Washington Redskins – Quentin Groves DE, Auburn
I look for the Skins to address the defensive line with their first
pick. Groves’ stock is rising rapidly and he could be the hidden gem of
the first round.
#22 Pick to Dallas
Cowboys – DeSean Jackson WR, California
I’m not sold that Jackson will slip this far, but it will be huge for
the Boyd if they can nab him here. Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn are
both nearing their mid 30’s and Jackson would give them a young gun to
learn from these experienced vets.
#23 Pick to Pittsburgh Steelers – Aquib Talib CB, Kansas
Pittsburgh does not have a Rod Woodson in the secondary these days. The
Steelers will need to address the secondary, particularly at the
cornerback spot. Talib has a huge upside.
#24 Pick to Tennessee Titans – Calais Campbell DE, Miami
The Titans will likely address their defense first, a unit which was
good enough to help them win a lot of ugly games last season. I like the
move and I see Campbell as a good fit. Getting some speed coming off the
corner is never a bad thing.
#25 Pick to Seattle
Seahawks – Branden Albert OG, Virginia
Albert could finally be the answer to replacing Steve Hutchinson. With
so many teams going after defensive help and offensive tackles, Alert
could slide as the best OG in the draft.
#26 Pick to
Jacksonville Jaguars – Phillip Merling DE Clemson
With so many top prospects at defensive end, the Jags will likely grab
Merling here and then address the interior of their defensive front.
#27 Pick toSan Diego
Chargers – Kenny Phillips FS, Miami
Improving the secondary is long overdue for this team and sometimes just
one player can make all the difference. Just look at what adding Bob
Sanders did for the Colts. Phillips could be that guy.
#28 Pick to
Dallas Cowboys – Reggie Smith CB, Oklahoma
In several games last season, two against the New York Giants, we saw
that the Cowboys were susceptible to being beat on the corner. Smith
looks like he will be the best available corner left at this juncture.
#29 Pick to San
Francisco 49ers – Limas Sweed WR, Texas
The 49ers had a disappointing season after driving up their expectations
with a solid season in 2006. The 49ers must improve its non-existent
passing game and adding Limas Sweed should help. Alex Smith will be
greatly appreciative.
#30 Pick to Green Bay
Packers – Brandon Flowers CB, Virginia Tech
The Packers could do a number of things with this pick, but I look for
them to go with a corner. Al Harris and Charles Woodson will be entering
their 12th NFL seasons in the fall. Green Bay needs to develop a young
lock down corner to take on the young speedy receivers the league is
producing.
#31 Pick to New
England Patriots
The Pats have to forfeit this one because of “Spygate.” If you’re going
to cheat, don’t get caught. It’s kind of a slap on the wrist as the Pats
still get to pick 7th, having gotten that pick from San Francisco.
#32 Pick to NY Giants – Dominique Rogers-Cromartie CB Tennessee State
Jerry Reese wants another playmaker in the secondary. Who can blame him?
The G-Men aren’t always going to be able to bring the heat like they did
on Brady in the Super Bowl so adding another lock down corner makes
sense here.
That concludes my take on the first round of the NFL Draft. Make sure
you check back for upcoming NFL Draft articles. Nobody know the NFL like
Jimmy B.
