2008 NFL Mock Draft
Take a look at our NFL Draft Preview of
Picks 1-10, 11-20, and then finally
21-30 .
We’re right in the middle of March
Madness, but Jimmy always stays tuned in to the NFL and thought he
would take a little time to divulge his 2008 NFL Mock Draft.
Jimmy lists his top 16 picks in part one of his first round mock.
#1 Pick to Miami Dolphins – Matt Ryan QB, Boston College
If Bill Parcells, the guy who pulled the plug with Drew Bledsoe in favor
of the anonymous Tony Romo, goes with Ryan here, I am sold that he will
become the best QB the Fish have had since Marino. Maybe that’s not
saying much, but Parcells has proven to be a good evaluator of talent.
The Dolphins need a QB to build around and he’s the best in this draft.
#2 Pick to St. Louis Rams – Glenn Dorsey DT, LSU
Improvement to the defensive line has long been overdue for the Rams.
Dorsey has the ability to step right in and make an impact as a rookie.
We could be talking Pro Bowl just a few seasons into his NFL career.
#3 Pick to Atlanta Falcons – Chris Long DE, Virginia
The Falcons will take Long here with no risk factor, meaning that of all
the first rounders, we know that he will produce. He is also a guy with
great character, something this franchise needs, and is from the same
blood line as Raider great, and father, Howie Long.
#4 Pick to Oakland Raiders – Darren McFadden RB, Arkansas
McFadden can flat out fly, and despite concerns about the thickness of
his legs, Owner Al Davis won’t be able to pass this kid up. If you
remember, Marcus Allen looked more like a wide receiver than a running
back.
#5 Pick to Kansas
City Chiefs – Sedrick Ellis DT, USC
The Chief’s defensive line has been a major weakness. With Herman
Edward’s being a defensive minded coach, I like him to take the next
best available defensive tackle. He would gladly grab Dorsey is he
miraculously slipped.
#6 Pick to New York Jets – Vernon Gholston DE/LB, Ohio State
Gholston’s stock has continued to rise and it looks like he could go in
the top ten. The Jets need a marquee pass rusher and Gholston would give
them that.
#7 Pick to New England Patriots – Leodis McKelvin CB, Troy
It’s a crime that the Pats get to pick in the top ten, taking the Niners’
spot. I’ll be surprised if they don’t try to add depth to their
secondary. McKelvin is the best cover corner in the draft with the
ability to star on special teams as well. He looks to be a perfect fit
for this team.
#8 Pick to Baltimore Ravens – Jake Long OT, Michigan
The second stud with the last name of Long will not slide any deeper
that the 8th pick where the Ravens will gladly nab him. Veteran All-Pro
tackle, Jonathan Ogden, is expected to retire and Jake Long will become
the new focal point of the O-line.
#9 Pick to Cincinnati
Bengals – Rashard Mendenhall RB, Illinois
I would like to see Cincy make a defensive move, but I don’t think
they’ll let Mendenhall stay on the board at pick #9. The Bengals have an
explosive offense and adding a feature back will give them more
versatility and balance.
#10 Pick to New Orleans Saints – Mike Jenkins CB, South Florida
New Orleans showed that its offense is still a force to be reckoned
after a slow start last season, but its defense was abused from start to
finish. Jenkins will give the Saints one solid corner to build its
secondary around.
#11 Pick to Buffalo Bills – Keith Rivers LB, USC
I like the strides the Bills have made and they will clearly be in a
position to challenge for the postseason in 2008. Buffalo’s defense has
been built around playmakers up front, and Rivers, with his speed and
agility, certainly fits that mold.
#12 Pick to Denver
Broncos – Ryan Clady OT, Boise State
The Broncos were a big disappointment last season, with weak side
offensive line play as the most glaring weakness. Clady looks to be the
best pure left tackle in the 2008 draft class and Denver should take him
to protect the young Cutler.
#13 Pick to Carolina
Panthers – Brian Brohm QB, Louisville
This looks to be a proactive move, but all indicators are that the
Panthers will look to add a QB of the future if Brohm is still on the
board.
#14 Pick to Chicago Bears – Jeff Otah OT, Pitt
The Bears need wide receiver help and offensive line bolstering. With
this wide receiver class not nearly as strong as we’ve seen in the
recent past, I like the Bears to go with top O-line prospect Otah.
#15 Pick to Detroit Lions – Derrick Harvey DE, Florida
I see the Lions picking intelligently here. Detroit made big strides
last season, proving that it can score the football on offense. The
defense needs help and Harvey will give them a major pass rushing
presence off the edge.
#16 Pick to Arizona Cardinals – Kentwan Balmer DT, North Carolina
Defensive tackle is clearly one of the deepest positions in this year’s
draft. Balmer looks to be capable of starting as a rookie on a unit
which desperately needs a playmaker up front.
