2008 National League West Odds & Predictions
The NL West proved to be the deadliest National
League division last season with the Diamondbacks
winning the West and advancing to the NLCS and the
Rockies trumping them as the NL wild card to advance to
the World Series. Find out which team has the better
odds to win the NL West in this divisional look.
1st Place –
Arizona Diamondbacks
The Snakes came out on top in the West in 2007 and I
like them to repeat. No longer the desert dogs, the
D-Backs are the clear favorites to win the division and
I have to agree. With Brandon Webb and the Big Unit, the
Snakes already had a formidable top of the rotation.
Now, they add ace Dan Haren from Oakland, who might
actually be the best pitcher on this staff. Take the
Snakes at
9/5
odds to win the West.
2nd Place –
Los Angeles Dodgers
I think the LA draft Dodgers will trump the Rockies this
season because its pitching is just too good. With Brad
Penny, Derek Lowe, Jason Schmidt, Chad Billingsley, and
now, Asian sensation, Hiroki Kuroda, the Dodgers will
contend for a division title. Andruw Jones comes over
from Atlanta to give this team a much needed boost at
the plate, but they still aren’t as solid one through
eight as the Diamondbacks.
Bet
the Dodgers at 3/1 odds to take the division title.
3rd Place –
Colorado Rockies
The Rockies got hot at just the right time in 2007 and
went on a memorable run. Then, in the World Series, we
remembered what this team’s weakness is – its pitching.
The Rockies don’t have a true ace and don’t even have as
good a staff as the San Diego Padres. Colorado does have
the best lineup in this division with Holiday and Helton
leading the way, but it won’t be enough. The Rockies are
listed
at
11/4 odds to win the West.
4th Place – San
Diego Padres
Solid starting pitching in a pitcher-friendly park makes
the Padres a contender each season. San Diego narrowly
missed the postseason in 2007, but it looks like they
will take another step back this year. There’s no doubt
that Jake Peavy and Chris Young and company can pitch,
but the batting order is too weak to contend in 2008. If
the Padres are your sleeper bet, take them
at
11/4 odds to win the division.
5th Place –
San Francisco Giants
I think you’ll all agree that the Giants will finish
well out of the mix this season. Barry Zito clearly does
not have ace stuff anymore and the club did nothing to
replace Bonds – there best power hitter. Aaron Rowand
might be the only bright spot in the order, but even his
numbers are expected to decline in a tough hitter’s
park. The Giants are
listed at 18/1 odds.
