Favorite – USC Trojans: -350 to win Pac-10 at Sportsbook.com
USC may not have a Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, or even a John David Booty under center this season, but this team has reloading down to a science. With the most talent in the league on both sides of the ball, still, the Trojans have a great shot at going undefeated in the Pac-10. Mark Sanchez does have some starting experience and running back Joe McKnight is slated to be the next Reggie Bush. USC’s offense will score the football and its big play defense will too. It’s this defense which makes the Trojans a legit BCS championship contender. USC’s linebacker unit is as strong as you’ll find with Brian Cushing and Rey Maualuga. Cushing was the Rose Bowl MVP in 2007 and Maualuga took home the same honor in 2008. Stanford was a big surprise defeat last season and a good Oregon team took down the Trojans as well, but this year’s team very well could run the table.
Sleeper – Oregon Ducks: +700 to win Pac-10 at Sportsbook.com
An injury to starting QB and Heisman hopeful Dennis Dixon may have kept the Ducks from winning the Pac-10 title a season ago. After losing its last three regular season games, the teams rebounded in the Sun Bowl to defeat a South Florida team which was ranked as high as No. 2 in the country 56-21. Justin Roper quarterbacked that game and he, or Nate Costa, look to be capable of putting the Ducks in the Pac-10 title hunt. Having to go to Arizona State and USC will not be easy, but Oregon beat both of those teams last season and will be very determined to win the conference after watching its season unravel in the final three games. If USC isn’t able to reload as well as normal, the Ducks could swoop in and steal the league.
The betting line on other top contenders Arizona State, Cal, and UCLA is +300, +800, and +800 respectively. Arizona State won 10 games last season with its only conference losses coming to USC and Oregon. They’ll have no problem scoring behind the strong arm of QB Rudy Carpenter, but the defense has to continue to improve if the Sun Devils want to make a run. This team gave up 35 points to Oregon, 44 to USC, and 52 in the Holiday Bowl to Texas.
