2008 Pittsburgh Steelers NFL Draft Needs
Over the last five drafts, the Steelers haven't hit on a lot of their
selections, but the ones that have hit have been exceptional additions
to the team. During that span, Pittsburgh has landed strong safety Troy
Polamalu, QB Ben Roethlisberger, tight end Heath Miller, and wide
receiver Santonio Holmes. Heading into this draft, it is almost certain
that the Steelers will look to bolster their offensive line, which is
always crucial on a team with such a strong tradition in running the
football. Jimmy Boyd's 2008 Pittsburgh Steelers NFL Draft needs
will show your where they will be looking first.
#1 Center
The Steelers never thought replacing retired Pro Bowl center Jeff
Hartings would be so difficult. Sean Mahan was not able to adequately
handle big nose guards last season after taking over. Pittsburgh has
said that it will give Darnell Stapleton a go this season, but they
could use a strong center who excels in one-on-one blocking situations.
Notre Dame's John Sullivan has proven to be very strong at the point of
attack in college.
#2 Guard
With the loss of Pro Bowl guard Alan Faneca, this spot becomes a
priority. The Steelers did re-sign Kendall Simmons because they didn't
want to replace both guards, but there is little depth at this spot now.
Head coach Mike Tomlin is in favor of bigger, stronger, offensive
lineman. Clemson's Chris McDuffie fits the mold with his 6'4'' 322 lb
frame.
#3 Defensive End
A perfect solution here would be Miami's Calais Campbell as he can play
the run and the pass well, but the Steelers likely won't address this
spot until round two. Ryan McBean, a fourth round pick last season,
could contribute this season but his size and strength are still issues.
Pittsburgh will likely take the best available run-stopping defensive
end in the second round.
#4 Inside Linebacker
Last year's first round draft pick, Lawrence Timmons, will be given the
chance to compete with Larry Foote for the starting inside backer spot.
But Pittsburgh must get deeper here. James Farrior is 33 years old and
in the last year of his contract. Pittsburgh won't address this need
until at least the third round, but they need to find a developmental
guy they can have waiting in the wings.
#5 Cornerback
Defensive Coordinator Dick LeBeau loves good corners to execute his
attacking style of defense. Veteran Deshea Townsend is coming off an
excellent 2007 season and rookie William Gay played better than
expected. Still, if Pittsburgh can get a good corner to spot-play and
add competition and depth, they will.
