2008 Preakness Stakes Picks
Jimmy Boyd is a perfect 2-for-2 in Triple Crown races dating back to the 2007 Belmont Stakes when he pegged the filly Rags to Riches. He then advised clients to take Big Brown in his 2008 Kentucky Derby predictions article as the inexperienced horse looked like an old pro when he ran away with the Derby. Now, Jimmy has weighed the Preakness field and he’s ready to pull of his own version of the Triple Crown by landing his 2008 Preakness Stakes picks. Jimmy gives you his win, place, and show bets below as well as a fourth horse to pull off the superfecta.
Win: Big Brown 1-4 odds at BodogLife racebook
I wish we were still getting the 3-1 odds we got with Big Brown in the Kentucky Derby, but we still take him here as he is heads and shoulders better than the competition. The biggest argument for not taking Big Brown in the Derby besides his hoof issues and his inexperience was that many didn’t think his speed would hold up on the big Churchill Downs track, especially from the 20 pole. He proved those doubters terribly wrong and now he is really in his element here at Pimlico. The Preakness is an all out sprint on a shorter track and I expect another dominant performance as he improves to 5-0 in his young career and heads to the Belmont with a chance to make history.
Place: Behindatthebar 10-1 at BodogLife racebook
It is a top heavy field in my opinion so we will go with the next horse in line to finish second. This is a horse that super trainer Todd Pletcher held out of the Derby in favor of Denis of Cork who finished third in that race. It would appear that Behindatthebar is at least as talented, if not more so, than Denis of Cork, so we feel very confident in his ability to finish second. This horse has proven himself with a number of top finishes including one at Lexington on April 19th and winning a first-level allowance race at Santa Anita on April 3rd. His fresh legs and raw speed make him a great pick to finish in the top three.
Show: Giant Moon 20-1 odds at BodogLife racebook
Giant Moon is a very talented horse, one which won its first four races. That’s something which no slouch can do. A ninth place finish in the Gotham sent up a red flag for backers, but Giant Moon’s camp dismissed that disappointing performance to severe weather conditions. He followed that up with a fourth place performance at the Wood Memorial. Giant Moon has trained well and the fact that he improved in his last big race is a good sign in my book. There’s no doubt that Giant Moon is a great horse and he has more race experience than Big Brown in that he has had to overcome more obstacles. I like Giant Moon to turn in another solid performance this week.
These are my top three horses for the 2008 Preakness Stakes. Let’s hope I can make it three straight Triple Crown race winners. If you’re looking to lay very little to win a nice chunk of change, add Hey Byrn to the list and place a Superfecta exotic wager. With multiple early season wins, including a win at the Holy Bull Stakes in April, this sprinter is nice fourth place pick.
