San Antonio Spurs Odds to Win the 2008 NBA Finals
The San Antonio Spurs look just as
capable as any other team in the West at advancing to
the NBA Finals with a chance to win back-to-back titles
for the first time during their dynasty. Jimmy Boyd
takes a look at the 2008 San Antonio Spurs odds to
win the NBA Finals in this article.

Why they'll win it all:
The Spurs have been there and done that multiple times.
They will be the most accomplished team in the
postseason. San Antonio attributes its championships to
great defensive play and once again this season the
Spurs rank in the top ten in four major defensive
categories. They are third in the league in points
allowed (90.6), fifth in field goal percentage defense
(44.4%), third in three-point percentage defense
(34.2%), and ninth in defensive rebounding. Bruce Bowen
gives the Spurs a guy which can shadow its opponents
best perimeter scorer. Tony Parker's speed bothers most
every point guard in the league and Manu Ginobli is also
a very capable defender who is one of the best
off-the-ball thieves in the league. And then there's
"The Big Fundamental" Tim Duncan. This guy has been one
of the best playoff performers in the history of the
NBA. The Spurs have struggled at times on the road, but
they are always tough in their own building. It's been
no exception this season as San Antonio is 32-7 on its
home floor. If the Spurs can end up winning the neck and
neck West to secure home court through the playoffs,
they'll be in good shape. Experience, defense, and
Duncan sounds like a combination capable of winning
another title.
Why they won't:
Winning back-to-back titles is not an easy task. Only
several special teams throughout the history of the NBA
have ever been able to pull it off. This current Spurs
team has won multiple titles, but never in consecutive
years. While offense is certainly not San Antonio's
forte, I can't remember it looking as lackluster as it
has at times this season - most recently in a April 9th
game at home against the Suns. The Spurs rank 26th in
the league in scoring, 15th in field goal percentage and
15th in free throw percentage. While "defense wins
champions" has been the old adage that has followed the
Spurs during their championship seasons, they may fall
victim to the old adage "you have to score to win" in
2008. Robert Horry and Brent Barry are two veteran bench
players who have shined in the playoffs for this team
but both are currently out injured. I think that San
Antonio is going to have a very difficult time even
getting back to the Finals in a tough Western Conference
if these key guys aren't healthy enough to play
effectively.
