2008 SEC Conference Basketball Tournament Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on March 8, 2008

The SEC tournament has been dominated by the Florida Gators the past three seasons with Florida winning the title in 2005-2007. It appears that we will see a new champion this year. Find out who is in the driver’s seat in Jimmy Boyd’s 2008 SEC tournament predictions.

The SEC tourney starts up on Thursday March 13th and carries through the weekend. Atlanta’s Georgia Dome will once again house the event, just as it has in 8 of the last 11 seasons. You’ll be able to catch the early round of the tournament on local networks, but the tournament title game will be broadcast nationally on CBS.

The Tennessee Volunteers have been the talk of the SEC this season with Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and Mississippi State making some noise. The Vols have already wrapped up the regular season SEC championship with a 13-2 conference record. A win over a less-than-mediocre South Carolina team in its season finale will improve the Vols to 28-3 on the year. Tennessee is currently the fourth ranked team in the country. The Vols spent a brief stint in the number one slt after knocking off undefeated Memphis, but they were quickly defeated by Vanderbilt in their next game. Tennessee will be playing to shore up a number one seed and the Vols might have to win the conference tournament to earn that honor as North Carolina, Duke, Kansas, UCLA, and Memphis all are in good position to take number one seeds. And I’ve got to tell you, I like Tennessee chances. Vanderbilt is responsible for handing Tennessee one of its two conference losses, but the Commodores have been very poor on the road. Vandy is a perfect 19-0 at home this season, where it beat the Vols, but it is just 4-5 in road games. Kentucky is the only team that I can see upsetting Tennessee. The Wildcats have handed the Vols one of its three losses this season and played them to within three points on the road. Since getting off to a very sluggish start, Kentucky has won 10 of its last 12 games to move into a tie for the second best record in the conference. If you’re looking for a little more bang for your buck, take Kentucky.

2007 Recap:

Last year, the Florida Gators won the SEC tournament championship for the third straight year. Florida cruised in its three games, beating Georgia by 17, crushing number two seed Ole Miss by 21, and finishing off Arkansas by 21 points as well in the championship game to end the Razorbacks’ Cinderella run.

Florida’s SEC tournament title ensured the Gators a number one seed in the Big Dance. Florida went on to advance to the national championship game where they took on Ohio State. These two schools were paired in the college football BCS championship game which saw Florida win and the Gators’ hoopsters followed suit, capturing back-to-back titles.
