Favorite – Georgia Bulldogs: +200 to win SEC at BetUS
The fact that Georgia plays one of the toughest schedules in the country has not stopped the BetUS oddsmakers from makes the Dawgs the odds on favorite to win the league. Having to face the likes of Arizona State, Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, Florida, and Auburn will be no cake walk, but the books feel the Dawgs can get the job done behind offensive weapons Knowshon Moreno and Matthew Stafford. The defense is not too shabby either, ranking 14th in the nation in yards allowed while playing in the country’s toughest conference. Georgia returns nine starters from that unit and should be even better.
Sleeper – LSU Tigers: +400 to win SEC at BetUS
It’s not often that we can call a defending national champion a sleeper, but with Georgia, Florida, and Auburn all favored to win the SEC ahead of the Tigers, we can here. LSU also goes to battle with an unproven player at the QB position following the dismissal of Ryan Perrilloux. And even with Glenn Dorsey moving on to the NFL, the Tigers still boast one of the best defensive and offensive lines in the nation. With a lot of talent returning and a winning tradition in place, a SEC title is not out of the question for LSU. At +400, the Tigers are the best value bet on the board in my opinion.
The betting line on the Florida Gators and the Auburn Tigers is +250 to win the SEC and either one of these teams could pull it off, although I feel the Gators are more worthy of your money. With Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow and talented playmaker Percy Harvin, the Gators will have one of the toughest offenses in the country to stop. A young defense could be the only thing holding the 2006 national champs back, but it did improve over the course of last season. I feel Auburn is a little overvalued at +250. With a new offensive scheme to master and with a defense that isn’t quite as solid as LSU’s, I think the Auburn Tigers are looking at second place in the SEC West.
Other notables are Alabama at +650 and Tennessee at +800, but the Tide still has some rebuilding to do and the Vols will have to go to battle without QB and team leader Erik Ainge, who departed for the NFL.
