College Bowl Predictions2008 Sugar Bowl Odds & PredictionsOne of the biggest games of the bowl season is the 2008 Sugar Bowl between Hawaii and Georgia. This game is set to take place on January 1st in New Orleans, Louisiana at 8:30 PM EST live on FOX. This is one of the storied bowls that first took place on New Year's Day back in 1935 between Tulane and Temple. After joining the BCS, the Sugar Bowl hosted the championship game in 2000 when Florida State beat Virginia Tech 46-29. Last year the game returned to New Orleans after being moved to Atlanta when Hurricane Katrina did so much damage to the SuperDome. We'll preview both teams below, but if you want the fast track to profits to start in 2008 then get signed up for Jimmy Boyd's college bowl picks today.
Hawaii comes into this game at a perfect 12-0 straight up (SU) and 4-6 against the spread (ATS). They have gone under in seven of their ten games this year even though they have a powerful offense that puts up more than 46 ppg. The unquestioned leader of that Hawaii offense is Colt Brennan. Brennan finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting earlier this month which was the highest finish for a Warrior in the school's history. He now holds 20 NCAA records, was second in the nation in passing, and third in pass efficiency. He has led the team to a no. 10 ranking, which is the highest in school history and only their second bowl game on the mainland (the other was the 1992 Holiday Bowl). He has plenty of targets to throw to with three receivers with more than 1,000 receiving yards and all of them rank in the top 10 in the country. A lot has been said about the Warrior offense, but the defense has improved this year under Greg McMackin. They are now 33rd in defense, up from 93rd a year ago due to an increase in the blitz and that has been a big reason why the team has improved. Georgia finished the year at 10-2 SU and 7-4 ATS, but really came on strong to close the season and almost made the national title game. Had the Bulldogs not lost to Tennessee and thus missed out on the conference championship game we have little doubt that this team would be vying for a national title. They are balanced in averaging 32 ppg on offense while allowing opponents to only 21. They are going to have to try to beat the Warriors so they aren't looked upon in the same light as Oklahoma after the Sooners lost to Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl a year ago. Matthew Stafford is going to try to lead the offense in this shootout and one thing he hasn't worried about all year long is being unprotected. He's only been sacked 14 times on the year and the protection as also helped open up holes for Knowshon Moreno. Moreno put up more than 100-yards rushing in every SEC game he started on his way to being named the conference freshman of the year. One of the things that has us pulling for Hawaii in this game on a personal level is so that they can go undefeated and the BCS is once again questioned as to how an undefeated team didn't even get a chance. We like the idea of having a playoff and why we don't think Hawaii is the best team in the nation, why not let them have a chance to prove us wrong. Interesting Trends: Hawaii is 2-5 ATS over their last seven games Georgia hasn't lost since October 6th at Tennesee. A span of six games.
