2008 Sun Belt Football Picks & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd

Jimmy Boyd’s 2008 Sun Belt Conference predictions rate the eight-team conference from top to bottom. Knowing more about these smaller conferences than any other handicapper widens the scale of games Jimmy has to pick from, making him the strongest adversary of sportsbooks everywhere. Play with a football handicapping service with endless winning resources and no limitations for the best college football picks this season.

1st – Florida Atlantic Owls

On paper there is no debate; the Owls should repeat as league champs. QB Rusty Smith leads an offense that will be tough to stop. A tough non-conference schedule with games against Texas, Michigan State, and Minnesota will only raise the Owls’ level of play.

2nd – Troy Trojans

With the loss of record setting QB Omar Haugabook to graduation, the Trojans won’t have enough fire power to challenge the Owls. They should still keep the rest of the league at bay with lots of other talent and speed remaining on both sides of the football.

3rd – UL Monroe Warhawks

The Warhawks were hit hard by graduation on the all important offensive line and they are famous for getting off to poor starts in league play. This team did have enough talent to upset Alabama last season so they could pull off another surprise in 2008. They just won’t be able to do it week in and week out.

4th – UL Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns

The Cajuns are a dangerous offensive team with a pair of 1,000-yard rushers returning – QB Michael Desormeaux and RB Tyrell Fenroy. A defense which ranked worse than 104th in the nation in three major categories holds this team back.

5th – Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders

The line took two major hits that the Raiders won’t be able to float. Tackle Franklin Dunbar entered the NFL draft early and tackle Mark Fisher is out for the season with a shoulder injury. This is going to make life much more difficult for QB’ Joe Craddock and Dwight Dasher. More depth is needed everywhere.

6th – Arkansas State Indians

Because of the abundance of offensive talent that the Indians have, I wouldn’t be surprised if they finished a little better than sixth. They’ll have their work cut out for themselves though as they must replace the entire secondary and count on an inexperienced offensive line to perform. QB Corey Leonard and RB Reggie Arnold are fun to watch.

7th – North Texas Mean Green

North Texas was the worst defensive team in the conference in 2007 allowing over 45 points per game. This unit still has a long ways to go. QB Giovanni Vizza and WR Casey Fitzgerald are one of the better tandems in the league. Expect the Mean Green to be on the losing side of a lot of shootouts.

8th – Florida International Golden Panthers

Second year head coach Mario Cristobal has his system in place. Now the improvement can begin, but it is going to come in small stages. The Panthers don’t have enough overall talent, depth, and proven players on offense to compete with the leagues elite. Mario won’t have to gaze into his crystal ball to see that last place is inevitable.
