2008 Sweet 16 Predictions for
Friday's Games
Jimmy has given you a look at who he likes to win Thursday's Sweet 16
matchups, now it's time to see who he likes in Friday's action. Jimmy Boyd's
2008 Sweet 16 Predictions will not steer you wrong.
Villanova versus Kansas:
Villanova was as much of a bubble team as a team can possibly be. The committee
let the Cats into the dance and they have taken full advantage with wins over
Clemson and Siena. Kansas has had no trouble at all with either of its first
round opponents. While Nova has the talent to beat Kansas with a great backcourt
led by Scottie Reynolds, the Cats do not have the depth and experience that the
Jayhawks have. This Kansas team looks even better than the one which made the
Elite Eight last season.
Pick: Kansas
Davidson versus Wisconsin:
Davidson is the best story of the tournament thus far, knocking off WCC champion
Gonzaga and Big East champion Georgetown – a team which returned four starters
from last year's Final Four run. Davidson has done it with the sensational
shooting of Stephen Curry. There's no doubt that this kid, some of former NBA
talent Del Curry, is an NBA prospect. Wisconsin does not play with any flash at
all, but few teams are more effective. The Badgers just shut down a Kansas State
team with two lottery picks (Michael Beasley and Bill Walker), holding the
Wildcats to just 55 points. Wisconsin did not like its early exit from the
tourney last season and I like them to continue on to the round of eight as they
make anyone other than Curry beat them.
Pick: Wisconsin
Michigan State versus Memphis:
Michigan State looked impressive against Pitt in round two – a team that many
experts had picked to reach the Final Four following a Big East Conference
Tournament title. There's no question that Tom Izzo is one of the best
postseason coaches in college basketball. He'll be able to devise a game plan to
slow down the Memphis Tigers, but the question is if his team will be able to
score. Memphis will be the most athletic team the Spartans have seen all season
long and that poses some problems for them. What this one all comes down to is
that Michigan State doesn't have enough fire power to match the offensive
ability of Derrick Rose, Chris Douglas-Roberts, and Joey Dorsey.
Pick: Memphis
Stanford versus Texas:
This matchup pits Stanford's tough interior game against the great guard play of
the Longhorns. The Lopez twins are as tough as they come down low and Texas
doesn't have the players to match them. Texas does have home court advantage and
the best point guard in the country in D.J. Augustin. How solid Stanford's point
guard, Mitch Johnson plays could be the X-factor here.
