2008 TCU Football Predictions

TCU didn't compete in the MWC the way that many thought they would last season, finishing fifth with a 4-4 mark. TCU played close with Texas for more than a half before wearing down in last season's non-conference slate. That game seemed to take something out of the team that they could never get back. Expectations are high for the Horned Frogs again, but will we see another meltdown? Jimmy Boyd's 2008 TCU Horned Frogs predictions and season preview provide his take.

Offense

TCU returns a solid line, a Freshman All-American QB, and a running back who was picked as last season's preseason MWC Offensive Player of the Year. This all means that the Horned Frogs will bring a strong running attack to the table again. Aaron Brown should see plenty of big holes behind a rock solid offensive line. The Frogs didn't have Brown healthy for many games last season so his presence will make a big difference. Joseph Turner and Chris Smith provide the Frogs with exceptional running back depth. QB Andy Dalton set school records for completions and attempts in 2007 and also possesses the ability to run. Jeremy Kerley and Jimmy Young look to be the best options at wide receiver. Tight end Shae Reagan will return healthy after missing much of last season with a leg injury. He's big, fast, and reliable in the passing and running games.

Defense

TCU won't be able to atone for the losses of its best defensive end tandem it has maybe ever had. Chase Ortiz and Tommy Blake terrorized opposing passers and TCU will have to find adequate replacements in a hurry if they hope to regain the upper hand in the MWC. Matt Panfil and Jerry Hughes look like the replacements. The interior of the line should be tough with nose tackle Kelly Griffin and tackle Cody Moore back as starters. The Frogs were the 11th best team in the nation against the run in 2007 and should be formidable again. Jason Phillips is a preseason All-American candidate at middle linebacker and the team should also get good production from Robert Henson. The cornerback spot will be housed by Rafael Priest and Nick Sanders. Stephen Hodge is an important player at one of the safety spots in TCU's 4-2-5 base defense. He led all d-backs in the nation with eight sacks.

Special Teams

TCU will need a new place kicker and punter to step up and they will have big shoes to fill as they take over for all-league performers. Ross Evans is touted as having a big leg. He kicked a pair of 53-yarders in high school last year. Anson Kelton will take over at punter. Donald Massey is a solid returner who averaged 20.6 yards per kick return.

Prediction – 3rd Mountain West Conference

TCU will boast a strong running game once again, but the loss of two key pass rushers will set the defense far enough back that a league title will likely elude them. Still, this team is very capable of beating any team in the conference, especially at home. They could spoil BYU's title hopes on October 16th when the Cougars come to town.
