How Many Majors Will Tiger Woods Win in 2008

Tiger Woods is, without a doubt, the best golfer of his time. He is already one-for-one in 2008 tournaments, winning the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines for the sixth time. The win tied Woods for first place with the great Arnold Palmer for most PGA Tour victories with 62. Woods will have shattered this number by the time he hangs his hat for good. Now, all Tiger’s focus will go toward taking Jack Nicklaus’ majors record. Nicklaus won 18 majors on the PGA Tour and Woods currently sits with 13. As Tiger continues his hot pursuit of the most prestigious record in golf, it causes the question to arise of how many majors will Tiger Woods win in 2008? Sportsbook.com lists the odds and we explore their probabilities.

Oddsmakers feel most strongly that Woods will win one major in the 2008 season. Sportsbook.com lists the odds of Tiger winning just one major at 7/4. Since Woods’ first major victory in 1997, he has only gone winless in major tournaments 3 different years. Four times he has won one major since 1997. Four times he has won at least two majors, and once he has won three. Tiger has never swept all four majors in a season.

In 2005 and 2006, Tiger won two majors each year, and we believe your best bet is to take him to win two again in 2008. Woods has won the PGA Championship each of the past two years and history shows us that when he gets comfortable in a setting, he is always the guy to beat. We like Tiger to win the PGA Championship again in 2008. Tiger hasn’t won the U.S. Open since 2002, and that tournament will clearly be one that he goes after this season. Tiger has won both the Masters and the PGA Championship four times which are the tournament he has collected the most titles in. Even though he won The Open Championship in both 2005 and 2006, that is the only one we don’t feel as confident about this year. While he will be close in at least three majors this season, we like him to take home two and get a couple notches closer to Nicklaus. While Tiger is the only player with a shot at winning golf’s Grand Slam, the odds just aren’t in his favor. Only one golfer in history has pulled it off – Bobby Jones in 1930. But that was not the modern Grand Slam that we know today. Before The Masters was founded, the national amateur championships of the U.S and the UK were considered majors and those were the other two that Jones won besides the national opens. With Woods coming out and winning his first tournament this year, it shows just how hungry he is.
