2008 US Open Golf Predictions & Odds

Written by Jimmy Boyd

The Stanford St. Jude Championship is still underway, but PGA Tour fans everywhere are impatiently waiting for next week’s U.S. Open to tee off. Tiger Woods will be back in action as he looks to get one step closer to Jack Nicklaus’ major record by winning his 3rd U.S. Open. The thing that separates the U.S. Open from the Masters in terms of difficulty is that it is played on a different course each year. That’s why the best players in the world are almost always at or near the top of the leader board. Those guys can get it done on any course. Find out which top golfers Jimmy Boyd thinks will have the upper hand as he gives you three golfers capable of taking the top prize in his 2008 U.S. Open predictions when the tour hits Torrey Pines for the 108th U.S. Open.

Woods has been out for almost two months, but I think that actually plays to his advantage here as he likely won’t put as much pressure on himself since this is his first tournament back. A more relaxed Woods means trouble for the rest of the field. I’m also convinced that Woods can play Torrey Pines blindfolded. They should name the golf course after Tiger because he has owned it. He has six wins at Torrey Pines in his career at the Buick Invitational. He’s won four straight Buick’s including an 8-shot win this year. Despite Woods’ lengthy layoff, he’s still the safest bet on the tour in major tournaments because of his unmatched mental toughness.

Scott is getting sleeper odds here, but his game and no. 3 world ranking would indicate that he is nothing of the sort. Scott has been playing very solid golf this season and it’s no secret that this young Aussie is one of the most talented golfers on the planet. He has a win on the PGA Tour at the Byron Nelson Classic and another win on the European Tour at the Qatar Masters this season. The Majors have eluded him thus far in his career, but they won’t for much longer. He will be paired with Tiger and Phil Mickelson for the first two rounds and I believe that will elevate his game to another level. I believe his talent will have him challenging on Sunday.

The Majors normally hold no place for longshots, but Sabbatini deserves to be bought at this great price and here’s why. Sabbatini tore up Torrey Pines earlier this season at the Buick Invitational finishing tied for second place. Having already played a course well gives golfers an enormous amount of confidence. That’s why you see so many golfers perform well at the same tournaments each year. I think Sabbatini will shock the oddsmakers. There’s no better value bet on the board.
