2008 WAC College Football Picks & Predictions
Hawaii ruled the roost in the WAC in 2007. Find out if they’ll be tops again in Jimmy Boyd’s 2008 WAC predictions. Click on the individual team links below for a more in depth look at a couple of the more popular teams in the conference.
1st – Fresno State Bulldogs
Head coach Pat Hill’s teams always seem to lose league games that they shouldn’t. That won’t be the case this season. Plenty of starters are returning on both sides of the ball and I like Hill to break through with a win over nemesis Boise State to win the coveted title. QB Todd Brandstater manages the game well and never tries to do too much. He threw only five interceptions last season. A strong running attack will continue to open up play action opportunities for this team.
2nd – Boise State Broncos
Getting to play the top league contenders at home is a plus and it seems inevitable that the WAC title will come down to a November 28th home date with Fresno State. The running game will remain strong, but the unsettled QB spot keeps this team from being the conference elite.
3rd – Nevada Wolf Pack
With QB Colin Kaepernick and running back Luke Lippincott, the Wolf Pack’s pistol offense can challenge the league’s best on any given weekend. A defense which allowed more than 30 points a game last season will keep this team from strong title contention.
4th – Hawaii Warriors
Hawaii’s offense has received all the publicity in recent years but its defense will steal the show this season. Far too many key offensive players, including Heisman Trophy finalist Colt Brennan, are gone. I don’t think this team will be able to score the football enough to challenge for another title.
5th – New Mexico State Aggies
QB Chase Holbrook is the one to watch in the pass-happy WAC this season. Coach Hal Mumme might have the league’s best offense, but his defense will continue to let them down.
6th – San Jose State Spartans
San Jose State could finish higher if it can find ways to win close games, but it usually takes an experienced QB to pull off those types of wins and that’s something the Spartans won’t have.
7th – Louisiana Tech Bulldogs
Tech is always a tough place to visit for the teams out west so they and Hawaii always hold a nice home field advantage. That will keep them respectable again, but with so many holes on defense, I don’t see the Bulldogs winning too many road games.
8th – Idaho Vandals
The Vandals need to find something they feel good about and stick with it. The teams is lacking continuity and what do you expect with four new coaches in five years. Idaho has some talented players, but they just don’t stack up with those that Boise State and Fresno State are getting.
9th – Utah State Aggies
It’s going to be a long season for the Aggies who must play seven teams who played in bowl games last year. Improvement should be made with 10 returning starters on a maturing defense but it likely won’t show up in the win column.
