2009 Academy Awards Odds & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd

oscarsIf you’re planning on watching the 2009 Academy Awards February 22nd on ABC or if you’ll be at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood for the 81st annual awards cerememony, you might as well make some easy money on the event. This way, if host Hugh Jackman doesn’t do it for you, you can still keep a smile on your face knowing that you’re cashing in. We have uncovered who we like to take home Oscars for best actor, actress, picture, supporting actor, supporting actress, and director in this article.

Odds to Win Best Actor Oscar: Mickey Rourke – The Wrestler -125, Sean Penn – Milk +165, Frank Langella – Frost/Nixon +650, Brad Pitt – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button +1200, and Richard Jenkins – The Visitor +2000

While Both Brad Pitt and Richard Jenkings turned in good performances, I don’t see any long shots pulling off a major upset in this category. Mickey Rourke is the favorite because of his strong performance in The Wrestler but the fact that he took home the 2009 Golden Globe for best actor actually hurts him here as the Academy likely turns to another in this close race. While Frank Langella was good in Frost/Nixon, I don’t have him taking it home because the picture itself is quite a long shot. Sean Penn is showing solid value at +165 and I have him earning the second Oscar of his career. Bet Sean Penn at +165 to win the Oscar.

Odds to Win Best Actress: Kate Winslet – The Reader -110, Anne Hathaway – Rachel Getting Married +175, Meryl Streep – Doubt +600, Melissa Leo – Frozen River +1200, Angelina Jolie – Changeling +1800

Kate Winslet took home this award for her performance in The Reader at the Golden Globes this year and I like here to take it home again at the Oscars as she is clearly winning all the popularity contests for her role. If I had to pick a close second it would be Meryl Streep but close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades. Bet Kate Winslet at -110 to win the Oscar.

Odds to Win Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger – The Dark Knight -1400, Philip Seymour Hoffman – Doubt +1200, Josh Brolin – Milk +1200, Michael Shannon – Revolutionary Road +1400, and Robert Downey Jr. – Tropic Thunder +3000

The closest thing to a lock this year is Heath Ledger to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance in The Dark Knight. I would have voted for him to win best lead if they put him in that category as his performance was truly the best of the year in my opinion. With his tragic death, the Academy we’ll give him this award as a great tribute to his best and last performance. Bet Heath Ledger at -1400 to win the Oscar.

Odds to Win Best Supporting Actress: Penelope Cruz – Vicky Cristina Barcelona -125, Viola Davis – Doubt +300, Marisa Tomei – The Wrestler +400, Taraji P Henson – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button +1000, and Amy Adams – Doubt +1200

With Doubt having two nominations in this category, it is a solid strategy to take the favored of those nominations in my opinion. This movie deserves to take home some hardware and with Streep likely getting edged out in the best lead category, Viola Davis should come through here. Bet Viola Davis at +300 to win the Oscar.

Odds to Win Best Picture: Slumdog Millionaire -250, The Curious Case of Benjamin Buton +350, Milk +800, Frost/Nixon +1200, and The Reader +1600

This is the one we all wait for but don’t wait too impatiently as Slumdog Millionaire is the title that will be in the envelope. Milk provides some opposition and may create a little bit of suspense because in was not a part of the Golden Globe nomination but I think the Academy will agree that Slumdog Millionaire is the better film. It took home the Golden Globe and is ready to add to its legacy. Bet Slumdog Millionaire at -250 to win the Oscar.

Odds to Win Best Director: Danny Boyle – Slumdog Millionaire -300, David Fincher – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button +450, Gus Van Sant – Milk +1000, Ron Howard – Frost/Nixon +1000, and Stephen Daldry – The Reader +1400

With the actors getting most of the spotlight on an everyday basis, this is where the guys behind the scenes get to be recognized for their genius. The winner of this award usually always corresponds with the winner of best picture so we are going with Danny Boyle for his work on Slumdog Millionaire. Bet Danny Boyle at -300 to win the Oscar.
