2009 ACC Football Predictions
Here is my quick rundown on how I see each division of the ACC playing out this fall. If you would like to read my full report on each team, be sure to check out my NCAA football betting articles archive. And also, be sure to take advantage of our special $500 match bonus at BetUS!
ACC Coastal – 1st Place: Virginia Tech Hokies – A strong defense is a given in Blacksburg and the Hokies should put a much better offense on the field with plenty of skill players coming back in 2009. A third straight ACC championship is very much in the cards. VA Tech is listed at +150 to win the ACC Coastal Division.
2nd Place: North Carolina Tar Heels – An eight-win campaign in 2008 was a step in the right direction and I like the Heels to reach back-to-back bowl games for the first time in over a decade. UNC is listed at +325 to win the ACC Coastal Division.
3rd Place: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets – Paul Johnson’s option offense burst onto the scene and produced a nine-win season in 2008. The running game will once again be tough to stop with Jonathan Dwyer getting most of the carries, but a defense which lost a lot of talent up front figures to keep the Bees out of ACC title conversation. Georgia Tech is listed at +325 to win the ACC Coastal Division.
4th Place: Miami Hurricanes – Miami lost its final three games last season and now heads into 2009 with a new starting QB, new coordinators, and a tough schedule. Miami is listed at +400 to win the ACC Coastal Division.
5th Place: Virginia Cavaliers – After losing their final four games last season, the Cavs bring no momentum into their 2009 campaign. And they must adjust to a new spread offense with the hire of coordinator Gregg Brandon. Virginia is listed at +1500 to win the ACC Coastal Division.
6th Place: Duke Blue Devils – The Dukies finished just 1-7 in ACC play in 2008 and clearly still have a way to go before contending for a ACC Coastal title. Duke is listed at +2600 to win the ACC Coastal Division.
ACC Atlantic – 1st Place: Florida State Seminoles - The Seminoles are putting points on the board again behind a strong running attack. It may be hard to match last season’s nine wins with such a daunting schedule, but I have the Noles edging out the competition to take the Atlantic. FSU is listed at +200 to win the ACC Atlantic Division.
2nd Place: North Carolina State Wolf Pack – The Pack won their final four regular season games to become bowl eligible and I expect to see that momentum carry over to this season. NC State is listed at +250 to win the ACC Atlantic Division.
3rd Place: Clemson Tigers – There always seems to be talent in Clemson, South Carolina, but this talent has failed to live up to its expectations. Now the program turns to 39-year-old Dabo Swinney in hopes that he can harness the talent and bring home a title. Clemson is listed at +300 to win the ACC Atlantic Division.
4th Place: Wake Forest Demon Deacons – Nine starters return on an offense which should show improvement, but likely not enough improvement to make up for the loss of seven defensive starters who were heavily relied upon last year. Wake Forest is listed at +425 to win the ACC Atlantic Division.
5th Place: Boston College Eagles – A third straight ACC Atlantic Division crown likely won’t be in the cards with all the Eagles lost on a defensive unit which ranked fifth in the nation in total defense last season. Boston College is listed at +2000 to win the ACC Atlantic Division.
6th Place: Maryland Terrapins – After losing 30 seniors, it looks like it will be a tough season for a relatively inexperienced Maryland squad, especially after winning eight games in 2008. Maryland is listed at +1600 to win the ACC Atlantic Division.
