2009 WGC Accenture Match Play Championship Betting Odds

Accenture Match Play

It has been a long eight months for many golf fans, as those who continued to watch the PGA Tour, had to do so without TIger Woods, but that all come to an end this week, as Woods is making his first start of the 2009 season at the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship that is scheduled to get underway Wednesday Jan. 23 and continue on till a champion is crowned on Sunday. This isn’t your typical PGA Tour event where golfers play 4 rounds of golf with the guy with the best score taking home the trophy. Golfers are seeded much similar to the March Madness we are all so use to, as 64 golfers try to become the lone individual left come Sunday. In order to win a golfer will have to play at least parts of 7 rounds of golf, and for many the tournament will be over in just a matter of days. Here is a look at the favorites, guys in the middle of the pack, and the long shots we think have a shot at winning this weekend.

Favorites: Tiger Woods +400, Sergio Garcia +1500, Phil Mickelson +1500, and Anthony Kim +1500

It really says something about just how good Tiger Woods is compared to the rest of the field when he can take 8 months off and still be the overwhelming favorite to win once he comes back. Woods has flourished at this event winning it 3 times in his career, including last year where he defeated Stewart Cink. Garcia really started to show some signs of playing his best golf at the big events towards the end of last season, and it will be interesting if he can keep that up with Tiger back in the field. Mickelson is coming in fresh off his win at the Northern Trust Open, but will have to more consistent if he wants to win this weekend.

Middle of the Pack: Camilo Villegas +2000, Geoff Ogilvy +2000, Henrik Stenson +2000, Adam Scott +2500, Padraig Harrington +2500

There are plenty of golfers to like in this bunch, as you have the 2006 winner Geoff Ogilvy and the 2007 winner Henrick Stenson. Villegas is a scary guy for many of the golfers to face this weekend, and he could really make his name with a win this weekend. Harrington finished 2008 playing his best golf when it mattered most, as he won both the British Open for the 2nd straight year, and then backed it up with another major win at the PGA Championship. It would be a surprise if Scott did much of anything this weekend, as he has failed to get back the 2nd round the previous two years.

Long Shots: Vijay Singh +3000, Steve Stricker +3500, Ernie Els +4000, KJ Choi +4000, Jim Furyk +4000, Mike Weir +4000, Aaron Baddeley +5000, Retief Goosen +5000, Stewart Cink +5000, Zach Johnson +5000, and Justin Leonard +8000

Its rare to get so many big names with these kind of odds, but some just aren’t made for this format. The thing is any player can get hot and make a run in this thing, but just one bad round and its likely all over. Cink was amazing in 2008 before falling to Tiger in the finals, and guys like Singh, Choi, and Leonard all had deep runs last year. Keep your eye on Zach Johnson, as he has really played well to start the season, but it would take an outstanding weekend for him to pull this win out.
