2009 AFC Predictions
The Pittsburgh Steelers navigated the NFL’s most challenging schedule on its way to AFC North, AFC, and Super Bowl titles last season, and they did it with the league’s No. 1 defense. Pittsburgh is among the favorites to bring home the AFC crown again this season. In this article, I have listed my top three NFL picks to win the American Football Conference and the NFL betting odds associated with each team, as well as my final prediction on who I like to represent the conference in the Super Bowl. Pittsburgh Steelers +400 to win the AFC Title -The Steelers have now won two Super Bowls in the last for years and more than any other team in the history of the league. They boast one of the best defenses in the NFL, led by 2008 NFL Defensive Player of the Year James Harrison and premier safety Troy Polamalu. Ben Roethlisberger has been a winner from day one in the NFL. He’s not going to put up gaudy numbers most years, but he knows how to make the right play in the right situation, and he’s one of the best in the business when the game’s on the line. With most everyone back from last year, I have to think Pittsburgh will be right there again. Read more about my AFC North predictions.
San Diego Chargers +650 to win the AFC Title – The Chargers have rattled off three straight division titles and should make it four straight rather easily with the rest of the AFC West in rebuilding mode. 2008 was a bit of a down season after winning 14 and 13 games respectively each of the two previous years, but we can’t forget that LaDainian Tomlinson and Antonio Gates battled injuries and the team was without star pass rusher Shawne Merriman for basically the entire season. With all of these guys back at full strength entering the 2009 campaign, along with quarterback Philip Rivers, the Chargers should be able to make a run at Lombardi. New England Patriots +250 to win the AFC Title – While I think the Patriots are getting too much respect with this line, they still have to figure in the discussion for the AFC title now that Tom Brady is back under center. After all, the Patriots won 11 games in 2008 with a severely banged up roster and a quarterback who hadn’t started a game since high school. If Brady can stay healthy to deliver the pigskin to Randy Moss and Wes Welker, the Patriots figure to put an explosive offense on the field. Plus, this is a team used to winning, and it can’t be sitting well that they missed out on January football last season. Read more about my AFC East predictions.
Prediction: San Diego Chargers – The Chargers made it to the AFC championship game in the 2007 season and gave the Patriots all they wanted before eventually falling 12-21. Philip Rivers played through a knee injury and L.T. left early in the 1st quarter never to return. Health was an issue for the Chargers again last season, but the team still managed to win a game in the playoffs and play the Steelers tough in Pittsburgh. If the Chargers can avoid the injury bug, they have enough talent to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.
