1st Place: San Diego Chargers -350 to win the AFC West at BetUS – The Broncos, Raiders, and Chiefs are all in rebuilding mode while the Chargers are ready to challenge for an AFC title. No other team in this division can match the star power the Bolts bring to the table with names like Philip Rivers, LaDainian Tomlinson, Antonio Gates, and Shawne Merriman. The Chargers have won three straight AFC West championships and four in the last five years, and they did so last year without Merriman and with L.T. and Gates not at 100 percent. Make it four straight AFC West titles for the Chargers. Read more about my San Diego Chargers predictions.
2nd Place: Denver Broncos +450 to win the AFC West at BetUS – The Broncos lost their final three games last season and the AFC West title along with it. The collapse proved to be the straw that broke the camel’s back for long time head coach Mike Shanahan as it marked the third straight season Denver missed out on the playoffs. Oh how quickly they forgot about those back-to-back Super Bowl titles. Now Josh McDaniels faces the task of returning the Broncos to an elite AFC team and he will have to do it without Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler. Read more about my Denver Broncos predictions.
3rd Place: Oakland Raiders +1000 to win the AFC West at BetUS – Tom Cable stepped in as interim head coach for the Raiders last season and landed himself the head job by leading the team to back-to-back wins to close out last year. But those two wins were not enough to keep Oakland from its sixth straight season with 11 or more losses. The team made the highly criticized draft choice of Darrius Heyward-Bey with their first overall pick, but owner Al Davis loves his speed. The team is also excited to see what Darren McFadden is capable of in a full season and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell can build on his late season progress. Read more about my Oakland Raiders predictions.
4th Place: Kansas City Chiefs +800 to win the AFC West at BetUS - It’s hard to think the Chiefs can be worse than they were in 2008 when they finished 2-14, but I don’t expect Kansas City to be much better. With a new general manager, head coach, and starting quarterback, there is plenty of adjustments for the returning crop of players to make. Plus, the team goes to battle without future Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez this season. The team will miss his leadership as much as it will miss his skill set. The Chiefs were the youngest team in the NFL in 2008 and it’s these unproven youngsters that the organization will largely be relying on this season.
