2009 Australian Open Odds & Predictions
One of the four grand slam events in Tennis, the Australian Open is set to start on January 19th. Roger Federer has won three of the last five Australian Opens and is set as the odds-on favorite to win it again this year (+225). Other names that top the list are Andy Murray (+250), Rafael Nadal (+300), and last year’s winner, Novak Djokovic (+450). Interestingly, last year’s runner-up, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (+1500) comes in behind “The Field” (any player not listed below) (+800). By far the American with the best odds to win the event is Andy Roddick (+3000) who is the 8th ranked player in the world. The seeds for the tournament won’t be set until Friday, January 16th, but here are my projected top seeds:
Projected Seeds for the 2009 Australian Open (Men’s Singles)
1. Roger Federer – 2nd in the ATP rankings, has won 3 of the last 5 Australian Opens
2. Novak Djokovic – Last year’s winner, currently ranked #3 in the world behind Nadal and Federer
3. Rafael Nadal – #1 ranked player in the world
4. Nikolay Davydenko – #5 in the ATP Men’s Singles Rankings
5. Andy Murray – Has a winning heads-up record against Federer in his career, currently ranked #4 in the world
6. Andy Roddick – Ranked 8th in the world by ATP
7. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga – Last year’s runner-up in the event, ranked at #6 in the world at press
8. Fernando Gonzalez – Was the runner-up in 2007 to Federer, ranked 14th in the world
Odds to Win the 2009 Australian Open (Men’s Singles)
Andy Murray +250
Andy Roddick +3000
David Nalbandian +4000
Ernests Gulbis +2500
Fernando Gonzalez +7500
Gael Monfils +4000
Gilles Simon +5000
James Blake +10000
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga +1500
Juan Martin Del Potro +2500
Lleyton Hewitt +10000
Marcos Baghdatis +10000
Novak Djokovic +450
Rafael Nadal +300
Richard Gasquet +10000
Roger Federer +225
Tomas Berdych +10000
The Field (Any Other Player) +800
With so many of the world’s top players competing for the Australian Open Cup, it’s hard not to lean toward the favorite, Roger Federer, who is one of the best professional tennis players of all time. Federer is 27, which is relatively old for the sport, but he does so many things well, he is my pick to win the 2009 Australian Open. Federer has great footwork, a monster forehand, and an amazing serve. His speed helps make up for a so-so backhand, but there really aren’t many weaknesses in his game. Everyone is ready to hand the World’s Best Tennis Player title over to Rafael Nadal after he finished ranked #1 over Roger last year, but I think that Federer still has a few great years left in him, he just might not be as dominant as he has been.

Got something to say?

In the mens I’d same it’s almost impossible to go past Federer and Nadal, the 30 degree + temperatures predicted for next week should give either of them to much trouble. In the womens, well, with Sharapova out it really comes down to Jankovic and Ivanovic with the Williams sister an likely possibility. We’ll have to see what the draw throws up. Happy punting! Jamie M.A.
It is going to be Roger!
I think it will be Roger as well. There is considerable hype around Andy Murray to win this event, but I’m not sold on him being the next big thing in men’s singles.
im hoping its gonna be roddick. theres an outside chance for him to win as he is in good form, reaching the doha final. while i hope its gonna be roddick, i think Nadal or-much as i hate to say it- Murray is gonna win
No doubt it is going to be Murray. Go Murray go Team Murray
As much as I like Roger and I love watching history being made (I really want Roger to catch Sampras), I have to go with my gut and give the Australian Open and most of 2009 to Rafa. This guy is young, smart, strong, fast, confident, hard to rattle, and highly skilled.
babolat-
I’m reluctant to agree with you about Nadal. The kid is amazing, but I’m still a huge Federer fan. Maybe I’m still living in the past, but 27 sure doesn’t seem that old to me. There’s still plenty left in Roger’s tank! :)
