Big 12 South – 1st Place: Oklahoma Sooners – With Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford back to lead the nation’s no. 1 ranked scoring offense, along with game-breaking tight end Jermaine Gresham and a pair of 1,000-yard rushers, the Sooners look like the team to beat in the Big 12 again in 2009. Plus, a big-play defense which returns eight starters should continue to improve. Oklahoma is listed at +150 to win the Big 12 South Division.
2nd Place: Texas Longhorns – The Longhorns figure to challenge the Sooners every step of the way with Heisman Trophy runner-up Colt McCoy back for his senior season. An October 17th showdown with the Sooners in Dallas could decide the division. Texas is listed at +110 to win the Big 12 South Division.
3rd Place: Oklahoma State Cowboys – Quarterback Zac Robinson, wide receiver Dez Bryant, and running back Kendall Hunter will help the Cowboys boast one of the best offenses in the country again in 2009, but a defense which ranked 93rd in yards allowed in 2008 figures to keep State from a Big 12 South title. Oklahoma State is listed at +600 to win the Big 12 South Division.
4th Place: Texas Tech Red Raiders – It’s hard to think the Red Raiders can still contend after losing their record-setting quarterback and the best wide receiver in the country. Texas Tech is listed at +850 to win the Big 12 South Division.
5th Place: Baylor Bears – The Bears don’t have enough all-around talent to contend in the loaded South just yet, but talented quarterback Robert Griffin figures to produce fireworks while Baylor improves on its 4-8 2008 campaign. Baylor is listed at +1,600 to win the Big 12 South Division.
6th Place: Texas A&M Aggies – It’s going to be hard for the Aggies to become relevant in the South until they can improve a defensive unit which ranked 114th in both total and scoring defense. Texas A&M is listed at +3,300 to win the Big 12 South Division.
Big 12 North – 1st Place: Nebraska Corn Huskers – I expect Nebraska to build on a 9-4 season, in which it earned a share of the Big 12 North title, behind a strong running game and a greatly improved defense. Big Red is back. Nebraska is listed at +175 to win the Big 12 North Division.
2nd Place: Kansas Jayhawks – A Big 12 North title is a realistic goal for the Jayhawks. The offense will be tough to stop with QB Todd Reesing having the luxury of a pair of top flight wideouts to throw to, but the defense figures to be a major letdown once again. Kansas is listed at +200 to win the Big 12 North Division.
3rd Place: Missouri Tigers – After back-to-back seasons of double digit wins, a step back is expected from Mizzou without Heisman Trophy finalist Chase Daniel in the shotgun and minus a pair of All-American receivers. Mizzou is listed at +350 to win the Big 12 North Division.
4th Place: Colorado Buffaloes – The Buffaloes were one of the worst offensive teams in the country in 2008, averaging only 20.2 points per game (100th nationally) and the defense wasn’t much better. This could be the end of the rope for Dan Hawkins. Colorado is listed at +500 to win the Big 12 North Division.
5th Place: Kansas State Wildcats – Bill Snyder is back, but he has plenty of work to do before the Cats are contending in the North again. K-State is listed at +650 to win the Big 12 North Division.
6th Place: Iowa State Cyclones – The Cyclones went 0-8 in league play in 2008. Their schedule gives them an excellent opportunity to avoid being shut out again, but they will likely still find the Big 12 basement. Iowa State is listed at +2,500 to win the Big 12 North Division.
