2009 Big East Conference Football Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd

big east2 7309Here’s the quick rundown on how I see the Big East Conference shaking out this season. 1st Place: Cincinnati Bearcats – The defense loses 10 starters, but it’s a down year for the Big East, and head coach Brian Kelly’s ability to get the most out of his kids cannot be underestimated. He is 22-6 in his first two seasons for the Bearcats and he has enough offensive fire power returning to capture another Big East Crown in 2009. Cincinnati is listed at +800 to win the 2009 Big East title.

2nd Place: West Virginia Mountaineers – West Virginia has won nine or more games in each of the past four seasons, but this streak could be challenged in 2009 as the Mountaineers must take the field for the first time in a long time without playmaking quarterback Pat White. West Virginia is listed at +250 to win the 2009 Big East title.

3rd Place: Rutgers Scarlet Knights – After losing five of their first six games last season, the Knights finally put it all together and rattled off seven straight wins to close out the season, including a 29-23 Papajohns.com Bowl win over N.C. State. I like Rutgers to carry that momentum over to 2009. Rutgers is listed at +500 to win the 2009 Big East championship.

4th Place: Pittsburgh Panthers – Anything short of a second straight bowl bid and an eight win season will be a major disappointment for Dave Wannstedt’s Pitt Panthers, even with the loss of running back LeSean McCoy to the NFL. Pitt is listed at +250 to win the 2009 Big East championship.

5th Place: South Florida Bulls – The talent in players like quarterback Matt Grothe and defensive end George Selvie is undeniable, but this team underachieved in 2008, going just 2-5 in conference play, and I have a bad feeling they will again. South Florida is listed at +250 to win the 2009 Big East title.

6th Place: Connecticut Huskies – The Huskies went just 3-4 in Big East play with Donald Brown, but the offense, which has been keeping the program from challenging for a league title, figures to struggle without him. Fortunately the defense will remain strong enough to keep the Huskies in most games. UConn is listed at +800 to win the 2009 Big East title.

7th Place: Louisville Cardinals – Louisville finished just 1-6 in Big East play last season and it’s hard to think improvement is on the way with a big hole to fill at quarterback. Running back Victor Anderson should at least give fans something to cheer about. Louisville is listed at +1,500 to win the 2009 Big East championship.

8th Place: Syracuse Orange – The Orange finished just 1-6 in the league last season and have only won 10 games over the last four seasons. The offense will continue to struggle until they can bring in some better offensive line recruits. Syracuse remains a work in progress under new head man Doug Marrone. Syracuse is listed at +5,000 to win the 2009 Big East title.
