2009 Big West Conference Tournament Predictions
The 2009 Big West Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament is all set to get underway March 11-14 from the Anaheim Convention Center Arena in Anaheim, California. With no team in the running for at an large bid to the NCAA Tournament, this conference tournament figures to be a battle to the death for the automatic bid. The Big West is a 9-team league which means that one team is the odd man out and that team is Cal Poly SLO this time around. The top two seed receive byes into the semifinals with the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds automatically advancing to the quarterfinals. Cal State Northridge enters as the No. 1 seed after winning the Big West regular season title with an 11-5 mark. In this predictions article, I’ll break down the favorite and the team with the next best chance of winning it all. Bet the 2009 Big West Men’s Basketball Tournament at Bookmaker. The Favorite: CSU Northridge Matadors The Matadors will be without two or their top three scorers in the Big West Tournament and that leaves them very susceptible to being upset. Still, the Matadors proved to be a fairly deep team and hung on to win the regular season title. The format really plays to their favor as the Matadors will only have to win two games to be crowned Big West Tourney champs and punch their ticket to the Big Dance. If they are going to do so, 6′9” forward Tremaine Townsend must have a huge tournament. He currently leads the team with 11.1 points per game and 8.3 boards per contest. He can not afford to disappear like he did against Pacific in the season finale. Another Team That Can Win: Pacific Tigers While both Long Beach State, playing close to home, or Pacific can knock off the Matadors, I think Pacific has the best shot as it won both regular season meetings against Northridge. The Tigers lost both regular season meetings to Long Beach State so they’ll have to get by the 49ers first. Ending the season strong to create momentum is a them we constantly see produce conference tournament success. The Tigers did just that by winning their last 3 games and 5 of their last 7, including a big one over league champ Northridge, as I already mentioned. Guard Chad Troyer and forward Brayn LeDuc lead the way with 11.0 points per game. The Tigers have had some pretty good success in the Big West this decade and I would not be surprised if they marched right into the NCAA Tournament. 2008 Big West Conference Tournament Recap: No. 1 seed UC Santa Barbara nor No. 2 seed CS Northridge made it to the 2008 tournament championship game. Instead No. 3 seed Cal State Fullerton faced off with No. 5 seed UC Irvine and ended up bringing home the title. Cal State Fullerton dominated the tournament, winning all three of its games by double digits. CS Fullerton received a No. 14 seed in the Big Dance and made a first round exit at the hands of Wisconsin.
