2009 British Open Betting Odds
We are just a couple of days away from the 2009 British Open, and all eyes will be on the last two guys that have won this tournament. First everyone will be watching to see if Tiger Woods can come into the Open and win a major for the first time since winning the US Open last year. Woods won his 2nd and 3rd British Open titles in a row in 2005 and 2006, but it has been all Padraig Harrington the last two years, as he won his first ever major at Carnoustie in 2007 and then backed it up in 2008 with a win at Royal Birkdale. This year the tournament heads back to Turnberry for the first time since 1994, and that means a lot of players will be challenging a course that they never seen. Here is a look at the field broken down into the favorits, guys in the middle of the pack, and a few long shots I feel have a shot at coming away with the win.
Favorite: Tiger Woods +180, Ian Poulter +2000, Sergio Garcia +2000, and Retief Goosen +2000
I don’t think it comes as a surprise to anyone that Tiger Woods is the overall favorite to win this weekend, but by how much might be a little shocking. It hurts that Phil Mickelson is not in the field this weekend, but this isn’t Mickelson’s best major by any means. I look for Garcia to be the one that really challenges Tiger this weekend, and what better story would it be than for Garcia to be in contention for his first ever major win this weekend.
Middle of the Pack: Rory McIllroy +2500, Padraig Harrington +2500, Lee Westwood +2500, Hunter Mahan +2500, Geoff Ogilvy +3000, Anthony Kim +3000, Henrik Stenson +3000, Jim Furyk +3000, Paul Casey +3000, Steve Stricker +3000, and Martin Kaymer +3000
A bunch of very good golfers in this group, and if you are simply looking for a value bet this weekend, I don’t know how you look past Harrington, as he has proven his game is made for this event. Also keep a close eye on the youngster McIllroy, as he comes in off a 10th place finish at the US Open, and could be the surprise of the tournament this weekend. A couple of other guys I am very high on this weekend are Geoff Ogilvy, Henrik Stenson, and Paul Casey, as I feel all three of these golfers have the game to win at Turnberry.
Long Shots: Ernie Els +4000, Adam Scott +4000, Ross Fisher +4000, Zach Johnson +5000, Kenny Perry +5000, David Toms +6000, David Duval +6000, Sean O’Hair +6000, Vijay Singh +6000, and Justin Leonard +10000
Some big names with some pretty good betting odds here, but it hasn’t been very easy for a lot of the PGA Tour stars to come over and play well at the Open Championship. The two guys I like out of this group are O’Hair and Els, but I think there will be a lot of people watching Duval and how he plays this weekend after finishing tied for 2nd at the US Open.
