2009 Buffalo Bills NFL Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on August 14, 2009

bills 81409The Bills have missed out on the postseason nine straight years now. It appeared they would finally get over the hump when they got off to a strong 4-0 start last season, but they managed only three more wins the rest of the way. Despite the home wrecker that Terrell Owens has been, the franchise was willing to take a risk by bringing him on board this season. Let’s see if he gives the Bills enough of a lift to make the playoffs. The Buffalo Bills are listed at +3200 to win Super Bowl XLIV at Bookmaker.

Offense – This could be a make or break season for Bills quarterback Trent Edwards. The organization is expecting him to flourish with a top-flight receiving corps at his disposal. Edwards is a heady QB so hopefully he won’t let T.O. get in his head if the All-Pro wideout starts chirping a little bit. The Bills won’t have to be one dimensional as the running back position remain a strength. Marshawn Lynch will miss the first three games of the season due to suspension, but he’s expected to be highly productive when he returns. He’s rushed for 2,151 yards over the last two seasons. Until Lynch is ready to go, Fred Jackson and Dominic Rhodes will pick up the slack. T.O. joins Lee Evans and Josh Reed to form one of the most dynamic wide receiver units in the league. Evans caught 82 passes in 2006 but has seen his numbers drop to 55 and 63 receptions over the last two seasons because he has faced constant double teams. With Owens aboard, Evans should flourish once again. The team is still excited about the potential of James Hardy and they believe rookie tight end Shawn Nelson will be a good one. Up front, I’m not sure the Bills will be able to make up for the loss of Jason Peters.

Defense – The defensive front was a weakness for Buffalo last season as it failed to bring consistent pressure. I’ll give it to you in numbers.  The Bills’ 24 sacks ranked tied for 28th in the league. It was this deficiency that forced the Bills to draft Penn State’s Aaron Maybin with the 11th overall pick. He is being counted on to make an immediate impact as a pass rusher. Aaron Schobel missed 11 games with a foot injury in 2008 and the team definitely felt the effects. His health will be critical to any improvement up front. The linebacking unit was underwhelming a year ago as well. This is a critical year for middle backer Paul Posluszny. He certainly looks the part, but has yet to reach his expectations. He will likely be flanked by Keith Ellison and Kawika Mitchell. Mitchell is coming off a very solid season during which he had four sacks, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles. The secondary is talented and should thrive if Buffalo can apply more pressure up front. Leodis McKelvin looks like a future star at one corner and Terrence McGee is a solid vet at the other. The team is excited about rookie safety Jairus Byrd as well. Byrd had 17 picks for the University of Oregon and is the son of former pro Gil Byrd.

Prediction: 3rd AFC EastI have the Buffalo Bills finishing in third place in the division in my AFC East predictions.  With Tom Brady back for the Pats, and with the emergence of the Miami Dolphins, it looks like Buffalo could find itself in third even if it improves enough to post a winning mark. After three straight 7-9 seasons, it’s hard to think that T.O. will be enough to get the Bills back in the playoffs. The Bills are listed at +1000 to win the AFC East at Bookmaker.
