2009 Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on March 5, 2009

caa-3509The 2009 Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Tournament tips off Friday, March 6th from Richmond, Virginia with all 12 teams getting a shot at earning the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. George Mason won the 2008 tournament, but Virginia Commonwealth is the favorite this season in a very tight league. Jimmy Boyd discusses the favorite and the team with the next best chance of winning in this article. Bet the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament at Bookmaker. The Favorite: Virginia Commonwealth Rams The Rams won the CAA by a game over George Mason with a 14-4 mark in league play. The Rams posted 21 wins overall on the season to lead the league as well. After a blistering hot 8-1 start in league play, the Rams didn’t look so unbeatable down the stretch when they went 6-3, but it was good enough to hold on for the regular season title. The Rams won their final three conference games in convincing fashion to shore up the championship. If you are a big fan of college hoops, then you’ve almost certainly heard of Eric Maynor. The 6′2” guard averages 22.4 points per game and dishes out 6.2 assists per contest. But he’s not alone as forward Larry Sanders averages a near-double double with 11.2 points and 8 rebounds per contest. Guard Joey Rodriguez is an assassin from downtown, shooting 41.5% from three-point range this season. VCU lost in last year’s tournament in the semifinals as the No. 1 seed and will be out to wash that sour taste out of its mouth. Another Team That Can Win: Old Dominion Monarchs Old Dominion finished tied for third in the Colonial Athletic Association this season with a 12-6 mark but the Monarchs appear to be peaking at just the right time. Old Dominion comes in red hot, having won nine of its last 10 with wins over top seed VCU, No. 2 seed George Mason, and Northeastern. Winning in March is all about getting hot at the right time and the Monarchs are ready to break some hearts. Forward Gerald Lee leads the way with 15.7 points per game and guard Ben Finney averages double figures as well. It takes a strong defense to win championships and the Monarchs have just that. They allow only 61.1 points per game which is good for 32nd in the nation. 2008 Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Recap: No. 3 seed George Mason defeated No. 6 seed Northeastern in the second round after receiving a first round bye. It then went on to beat No. 2 seed UNC Wilmington in the semifinals and No. 5 seed William & Mary in the championship game. The win marked George Mason’s fourth tournament title and the third under head coach Jim Larranaga. George Mason earned a No. 12 seed in the Big Dance, but could not pull off the magic that brought it to the Final Four in 2006 as Notre Dame won 68-50 in round one of the East region.
