Offense – The Rams have some big holes to fill offensively after losing All-Mountain West Conference running back Gartrell Johnson and quarterback Billy Farris. Johnson racked up 1,476 yards and 12 touchdowns and Farris threw for 2,934 yards and 19 touchdowns. Together, they led an offensive which averaged a respectable 25.2 points per game. To add insult to injury, the Rams also lost tight end Kory Sperry and his nearly 500 receiving yards. The offensive line returns four starters so the running game shouldn’t take a major hit. John Mosure and juco All-American Leonard Mason are capable of getting it done on the ground. But the quarterback position isn’t as easy. Freshman Alex Kelly was projected to take over, but he decided to leave the program to pursue baseball at another school. That leaves senior Grant Stucker as the likely starter. While he is a good runner, he has not proven to be a consistent passer. If he isn’t able to hit the Rams’ talented wideouts consistently, juco transfer Jon Eastman and sophomore Klay Kubiak will get a chance. The last straw is true freshman Nico Ranieri. Hopefully head coach Steve Fairchild can find the right guy for the job because be has a couple gem wide receivers in Rashaun Greer and Dion Morton. Greer caught 63 passes for 1,114 yards and Morton hauled in 51 passes for 859 yards.
Defense – The Rams were all set to boast one of the better linebacker units in the league until Ricky Brewer was suspended for the entire 2009 season. That puts even more pressure on outside linebacker Mychal Sisson to pick up the slack. He earned Freshman All-American honors in 2008 with a team-high 105 stops. The Rams will be strong across the back with safety Klint Kubiak leading the charge. Gerard Thomas and Nick Oppenneer return at the corners and look for Elijah Blu Smith to come on strong at the free safety position.
The defensive line lost three starters to graduation and none of the returners even recorded a sack last season. In fact, the Rams only recorded nine sacks in all of 2008 which was the worst tally in the entire country. Finding a pass rush is a priority, but right now I don’t know where it’s going to come from.
Prediction: 5th Mountain West – While the offensive line and wide receiver unit is top notch, the Rams don’t figure to put a QB on the field capable of challenging for a league title in 2009. Still, Fairchild was able to scrape together a 7-6 season in his first year as head man, and with a favorable non-conference slate, he just might be able to work enough magic to have the Rams bowling again.
