2009 Final Four Odds & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd

final-four-predictionsAnd there were four. The stage is set at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan as Michigan State, Connecticut, Villanova, and North Carolina compete for a spot in the national championship game. In this article, we’ll take a look at each of the four remaining teams and discuss why they have what it takes to cut down the nets. North Carolina is listed as the -125 favorite to win the 2009 national championship while Villanova is listed as the +700 long shot.

North Carolina Tar Heels – Odds makers have penciled North Carolina in as the odds on favorite to win the national championship out of the remaining teams. Knowing that the betting public will be all over the Tar Heels, the books have made their price steep, asking bettors to lay 125 dollars just to win 100. North Carolina last won it all in 2005 and will have experience on its side this year as the Heels made it to the Final Four last season before losing to eventual champion Kansas. North Carolina has one thing that no other team in the Final Four has: Ty Lawson. If its opponents aren’t able to limit Lawson’s touches, North Carolina will likely be cutting down the nets. The North Carolina Tar Heels are listed as 7-point favorites against Villanova Saturday.

Connecticut Huskies – Many experts expected Connecticut to be a Final Four team when the season began, but a late season injury to guard Jerome Dyson looked like it might throw a wrinkle in Connecticut’s plans. But A.J. Price and Kemba Walker have stepped up their play to fill the void and now odds makers feel it will be Connecticut facing off with North Carolina in the national title game. UConn is listed at +225 to win the national title. The Huskies also have a weapon that no else has and that’s 7′3” giant Hasheem Thabeet. His presence on the boards and on the defensive end has been critical to the success of this team all season long. The Connecticut Huskies are listed as 4-point favorites against Michigan State this Saturday.

Michigan State Spartans – Michigan State has had a difficult road to the Final Four but it has met every challenge. The Spartans took down defending national champion Kansas in the round of 16 and then dominated No. 1 overall seed Louisville in the Elite Eight. With homecourt, so to speak, with the Final Four being held at Ford Field in Detroit, you can expect Michigan State to be as fired up as its been all season. Point guard Kalin Lucas catches most of the headlines, but this is a team through and through, and its stingy team defense is what gives the Spartans a chance to win it all. Michigan State is listed at +525 to win the national championship.

Villanova Wildcats – Villanova earned its way to the Final Four navigating through the difficult East Region, but the Wildcats made it look easy. After getting a bit of a scare from American in the first round, Nova crushed powerhouses UCLA and Duke to reach the Elite Eight. Then, the Wildcats proved their regular season win over No. 1 seed Pittsburgh was no fluke as they beat the Panthers yet again to reach the Final Four. Villanova can be a dangerous team as it has the luxury of playing with nothing to lose. Few expected the Wildcats to make it this far and now head coach Jay Wright has plenty of ammo to give his players one hell of a pregame speech. The Villanova Wildcats are 7-point underdogs against North Carolina Saturday.
