florida 8309Following a 13-1 season that ended with a 24-14 win over Oklahoma in the BCS championship game, the college football odds makers have made the Florida Gators the favorites to win it all again. Offense – Tim Tebow already has two BCS championships and a Heisman Trophy under his belt, but he is back for more. The Gators’ signal caller wants to deliver an undefeated season in his senior campaign (something Florida has never accomplished). Another Heisman would just be icing on the cake and would likely solidify him as the greatest player in college football history. Tebow led the Gators in both rushing and passing in 2008. He threw for 2,746 yards and 30 touchdowns against only four interceptions and ran for 673 yards and 12 more scores. The Gators will miss the skill set of Percy Harvin, but I have a feeling that Riley Cooper, David Nelson, Deonta Thompson, and Carl Moore will be up to the challenge of filling Harvin’s big shoes. A name to listen for will be tight end Aaron Hernandez. He caught 34 passes for 381 yards and five touchdowns last season and I expect this year’s numbers to dwarf those as he emerges into one of the best tight ends in the nation. Chris Rainey, Emmanuel Moody, and Jeff Demps will all get carries at the running back position. Rainey and Demps both have killer breakaway speed. The offensive line brings back three starters, but it lost both of its tackles. While this unit figures to jell, the only question is how long it will take.

Defense – Defense let the Gators down in the 2007 season, but that was not the case in 2008. An improved unit helped elevate Florida into a national champ. The unit allowed only 12.9 points per game (4th nationally) and 285.3 yards per game (9th nationally). Here’s the scary thing; all 11 starters are back. With a year of experience of playing together under their belts, the Gator defense should be even better in 2009. Florida boasts one of the premier defensive backfields in the country. Joe Haden is a lockdown corner and Ahmad Black is a big play safety who picked off seven passes last season. Middle linebacker Brandon Spikes is the Tim Tebow of the defense. The star senior linebacker is coming off a 93 tackle season and is a great leader on this side of the football. The defensive line is stacked with talent and depth. Defensive end Carlos Dunlap, the defensive MVP of the BCS Championship game, is coming off a 9.5-sack season and leads the charge up front.

Prediction: 1st SEC East – Remember Tebow’s postgame speech after the Gators fell by a point to Ole Miss? The kid delivered on his promise, didn’t he?  With a once in a lifetime player like Tebow back for his final season, don’t be surprised if the Gators repeat as SEC and BCS champs.  Florida is listed at -300 to win the SEC at Bookmaker.
