2009 Honda Classic Picks & Betting Odds

After an exciting weekend of golf where the fans once again got to see Tiger Woods in action, the attention turns to the 2009 Honda Classic, where golfers will look to take down PGA National Resort-Champion Course this weekend in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. While Tiger won’t be in action this weekend, there are a number of big names like Sergio Garcia and the defending champion Ernie Els who will be looking for their first wins of the season. Here is a breakdown of the field this weekend by the favorites, guys in the middle of the pack, and the longs shots I feel have a good chance of winning.
Favorites: Sergio Garcia +1000, Camilo Villegas +1200, Ernie Els +1500, and Rory McIlroy +1500
These four golfers all have a great shot to win this weekend, and it would be to no surprise if one of them didn’t wind up holding the trophy come Sunday. Els is not only the defending champion, but has two top ten finishes already this season, including last week at the Accenture Match Play Championship. Garcia didn’t have such a good start as he was upset in the first round last week, and you have to expect better golf out him this weekend. Villegas seems to be getting better and better, but has just a 12th place finish at the Mercedes-Benz Championship so far this season. Keep a good eye on Rory McIlroy, as he barely loss to Geoff Ogilvy last week, who went on to win the Match Play tournament.
Middle of the Pack: Robert Allenby +2000, Luke Donald +2000, Stewart Cink +2500, Boo Weekley +2500, Justin Rose +3000, Justin Leonard +3000, and Davis Love III +3000
There are a ton of great golfers just sitting in the middle of the pack this weekend, and any of these guys could be right there come Sunday. Both Donald and Leonard have won this tournament in the past, and Allenby is coming off back to back top 5 finishes at this event. While Love III has 7 top ten finishes at this event, he hasn’t recorded one since the tournament moved to PGA National. Our pick out of this is Boo Weekley, as Weekley lost in a playoff in 2007 to Mark Wilson, and was right in the thick of things last year before shooting and 80 on Sunday.
Long Shots: JB Holmes +4000, Mark Wilson +4000, Brian Gay +5000, Matt Kuchar +5000, Steve Marino +5000, Stuart Appleby +5000, Dudley Hart +6000, and Woody Austin +8000
Wilson, Appleby, Kutchar, and Hart have all won in the past, and you have to give these 4 the edge when you think about someone with these kinds of odds making it to the top this weekend. Marino is due to win on tour and this could be his week, or maybe a veteran like Woody Austin finds his game and surprises everyone.
