2009 HP Byron Nelson Championship Betting Odds
This week the PGA Tour stays down south, as players get ready for the 2009 HP Byron Nelson Classic held at Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas in Irving, Texas. The event follows up last week’s Texas Open, where Zach Johnson defended his title by winning in dramatic form in a playoff over James Driscoll. While Johnson won’t be in action this week at the Byron Nelson Classic, some of the top players in the world return to action after a short break after the Players Championship. With the tournament just a couple days away, I have broken down the field into the favorites, the guys in the middle of the pack, and the long shots I feel have a good shot at winning this thing.
Favorites: Phil Mickelson +800, Ian Poulter +1500, David Toms +2000, and Justin Leonard +2000
There are a number of good golfers playing this week, and it starts up top with Mickelson and Poulter. Mickelson is playing some great golf of late, finishing in the top 10 in five of his last 7 starts. The same could be said for Poulter, who finished 2nd at the Players Championship, and has a 3rd place finish here back in 2007. Toms hasn’t played here since 2004, but has been playing some good golf of late, with two top 10 finishes and a tie for 18th in his last 3 starts. Justin Leonard really had a shot to win the Texas Open last week, but just couldn’t get the putter going in the final round.
Middle of the Pack: Vijay Singh +2500, Charley Hoffman +2500, Anthony Kim +3000, Rory Sabbatini +3000, Scott Verplank +3000, Robert Allenby +3000, and Mike Weir +3000
Plenty of good golfers in this group, and I think it starts with Singh, who could be very close to returning to the form of old. Singh tied for 9th in his last start at the Players Championship, and has played well here before, winning it back in 2003. Verplank won back in 2007, so he is a threat to come back and win this weekend. I also like Hoffman, who finished tied for 9th last week, and is a near lock to make the cut. If I had to pick one guy out of this group, it would be Singh.
Long Shots: Adam Scott +4000, Ben Crane +4000, Chad Campbell +4000, Davis Love III +4000, Hunter Mahan +4000, Kevin Na +4000, Ryan Moore +5000, and Charlie Wi +5000
The defending champion Scott isn’t getting much love these days, and thats because this guy just isn’t playing that could of golf, and I would be shocked if he came out and defended his title this weekend. I think more attention should be focused on guys like Kevin Na, Chad Campbell, and Charlie Wi. One other golfer I think deserves some talk this week, is Moore, as Moore really played well here last year losing to Scott in a playoff.
