2009 John Deere Classic Betting Odds
The PGA Tour heads to the Midwest this week for the 2009 John Deere Classic at TPC Deer Run in Silvis, Illinois. Last year it was Kenny Perry who walked away with the trophy, as he was able to defeat Brad Adamonis and Jay Williamson in a playoff. While Perry is back this year to defend his title, some of the big names like Woods and Mickelson will not be in action this weekend. The key to winning this weekend is making as many birdies as you can, as over the last decade the winning score has been between 16 and 22 under. That means players have to take advantage of nearly every par-5 if they want a solid chance at winning this tournament. With just a couple days separating fans and players from first round action, I have broken down the field into the favorites, guys in the middle of the pack, and the long shots I feel have a good shot at winning.
Favorites: Kenny Perry +1000, Steve Stricker +1200, Zach Johnson +1500, David Toms +1500, and Lucas Glover +2000
There is no question that Perry is a strong threat to win this weekend, but I think he has just as good a chance to win this weekend as the other four guys in this group. Toms and Stricker have both been playing strong golf this season, and there might not be anyone playing much better than Glover right now, as he backed up his US Open win with a tie for 11th at the Travelers Championship and a tie for 5th last week at the AT&T National. Johnson has the game to win at TPC Deer Run, but hasn’t faired well over the last couple of years.
Middle of the Pack: Ryan Moore +2500, Davis Love III +2500, Scott Verplank +3000, John Senden +3000, and Bryce Molder +3000
I personally am not the biggest fan of this group of golfers to play well this weekend. Not one of these golfers have finished in the top 20 at this event over the last two years, but if I had to pick one guy to play well this weekend out of this group it would be Senden, who won this tournament back in 2006. Senden has failed to make the cut in his last two starts at this event following his win, so you might want to think twice before picking this guy to win this weekend.
Long Shots: Aaron Baddeley +4000, Matt Bettencourt +4000, Steve Marino +4000, Woody Austin +4000, Chad Campbell +5000, Charley Hoffman +5000, David Duval +5000, Matt Kuchar +5000, and DJ Trahan +6000
I think if you are looking for a sleeper outside of the favorites this weekend, you will have better luck taking one of these long shots to win. Campbell and Austin both finished in the top 10 here last year, and are solid options to come away with the win. Other guys that I really like in this group are Trahan, Marino, and Bettencourt, as I feel all three of these guys could surprise the rest of the field with a win. While I am not sold on Duval being back to where he was when he was the No.1 golfer in the world, there will be a lot of eyes watching him after his tie for 2nd at the US Open in his last start.
