2009 Kansas NCAA Football Predictions
Kansas took a step back following its 12-1 2007 campaign, but that step back was expected with a much more challenging schedule to navigate. The Jayhawks finished the 2008 season 8-5 and capped it off with a 42-21 win over Minnesota in the Insight Bowl. With Mizzou losing most of its offensive fire power, hopes are high for the Jayhawks to contend for the Big 12 North title once again. Kansas is listed at +6,500 to win the 2009 BCS championship.

Offense – Kansas is in good hands with quarterback Todd Reesing set to run the show for a third straight season. Reesing was sensational in 2008, passing for 3,888 yards and 32 touchdowns, as the Jayhawks boasted the eighth-best passing attack in the land. Reesing is rewriting the record books at Kansas and he can give himself some hefty breathing room this season as he has the luxury of throwing to one of the best wide receiver units in the nation. Dezmon Briscoe and Kerry Meier are Reesing’s two favorite targets. Briscoe is a big play guy who amassed 1,407 receiving yards in 2008 (3rd nationally) and Meier is more of a possession target, hauling in 97 passes for 1,045 yards and eight scores last season. The offensive line returns only two starters, but this doesn’t figure to derail Kansas’ North Division title chances as Reesing has shown throughout his career than he is elusive and can throw on the run. Jake Sharp returns at the running back spot following a season in which he rushed for 860 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Defense – If the Jayhawks aren’t able to win the Big 12 North, a defense which ranked 114th nationally against the pass in 2008 will most likely be to blame. The secondary has added some speed and it will lean on all-league safety Darrell Stuckey, who picked off five passes last season, but this unit still figures to give up big chunks of yards if the defensive line cannot mount a better pass rush. The coaching staff is excited about Jake Laptad, who came through with seven sacks after taking over one of the starting defensive end spots halfway through the season. The linebacker corps will likely struggle in 2009 after losing starters Mike Rivera, Joe Mortensen, and James Holt. This puts even more pressure on the defensive front, which returns four starters, to carry the load.
Prediction: 2nd Big 12 North – Kansas is expected to put one of its most explosive offenses in school history on the field this fall, but a defense which has been torched by the pass figures to keep the Jayhawks from a Big 12 North title. The North looks like it will be a tight race, and Kansas does get Nebraska at home, so I would be far from shocked if it pulls out the North Division. Championship or no championship, it should be a fun season in Lawrence with plenty of offense, and it should also be KU’s fifth straight non-losing campaign. Kansas is listed at +200 to win the Big 12 North Division at BetUS.
