mwc 63009Here’s the quick rundown on how I see the Mountain West Conference shaking out this season. 1st Place: Utah Utes – Another perfect 13-0 season isn’t very likely, but I expect the Utes to repeat as Mountain West Conference champs behind a stingy defense and a no-huddle offensive scheme. Utah is listed at +12,500 to win the 2009 BCS Championship at BetUS.

nd Place: TCU Horned Frogs - The nation’s No. 1 total defense last season loses seven starters, but plenty of talent is ready to step in and keep Gary Patterson’s team in the hunt for a league title. If TCU is able to return the favor to Utah in 2009, the Horned Frogs could claim the top spot. TCU is listed at +10,000 to win the 2009 BCS Championship at BetUS.

rd Place: BYU Cougars – Heading into the 2008 season, BYU was expected to be the team from the Mountain West capable of running the table, not in-state rival Utah. The Cougars were still able to win 10 games for a third straight year despite finishing third in the league. BYU lost to both TCU and Utah in 2008 but will get a chance to pay back each team at home this season. BYU is listed at +20,000 to win the 2009 BCS Championship at BetUS.

th Place: Air Force Falcons – The Falcons will once again boast one of the nation’s best running attacks led by quarterback Tim Jefferson and tailback Asher Clark, but a secondary which gave up the big play all to often against elite competition (Utah, BYU, TCU, Houston) figures to keep the Falcons out of the title hunt.

th Place: Colorado State Rams – The Rams showed promise in 2008 with a 7-6 season capped off by a New Mexico Bowl win over Fresno State, but it’s going to be hard for more progress to be made in 2009 with all-league running back Gartrell Johnson and quarterback Billy Farris not coming back.

th Place: UNLV Rebels – The Rebels will try to get back in a bowl game for the first time since the 2000 season behind a favorable schedule which includes seven home contests. If they aren’t able to get it done, a defense which ranked 100 or worse in scoring defense, rushing defense, and total defense in 2008 will be to blame.

th Place: New Mexico Lobos – First year head coach Mike Locksley comes over from Illinois and bring his spread-option offense with him to try to revive a unit which ranked 94th in the country in points per game in 2008 (21.1). His system is so different from the run-oriented one that was previously in place that growing pains are expected.

th Place: San Diego State Aztecs – Former Ball State head coach Brady Hoke road his 12-win season a year ago to a warm weather ticket to southern California. Now, he’ll have to raise the Aztecs to those heights in the near future if he hopes to stick around as it didn’t take the administration long to show Chuck Long the door.

th Place: Wyoming Cowboys – Wyoming put the worst scoring offense on the field in all of college football last season as the Cowboys managed only 12.7 points per game. First year head coach Dave Christensen certainly has his work cut out for himself.
