2009 NBA Draft Lottery

draft-lottery-51909On Tuesday, May 19th, 2009, the NBA Draft lottery celebrates its 25th birthday and 14 NBA teams are hoping to celebrate receiving the No. 1 pick in the draft. The likely prize will be Oklahoma power forward Blake Griffin.

After finishing with an NBA-worst 17-65 record, the Sacramento Kings have the best chance of landing the No. 1 overall pick at 25 percent, but that’s certainly not good enough odds to be ordering Blake his Jersey, especially since the team with the best chance of winning the lottery has not won it since 2004 when the Orlando Magic selected Dwight Howard. Here is a run down of the remaining teams eligible for the lottery and their chances of winning by percentage: Washington Wizards (19-63) – 17.8 percent, Los Angeles Clippers (19-63) – 17.7 percent, Oklahoma City Thunder (23-59) – 11.9 percent, Minnesota Timberwolves (24-59) – 7.6 percent, Memphis Grizzlies (24-58) – 7.5 percent. Golden State Warriors (29-53) – 4.3 percent, New York Knicks (32-50) – 2.8 percent, Toronto Raptors (33-49) – 1.7 percent, Milwaukee Bucks (34-48) – 1.0 percent, New Jersey Nets (34-48) – 0.9 percent, Charlotte Bobcats (35-47) – 0.7 percent, Indiana Pacers (36-46) – 0.6 percent, Phoenix Suns (46-36) – 0.5 percent.

The lottery will decide the teams which will draft in the first three spots. The remainder of the teams that were eligible for a lottery spot will pick in positions 4 through 14 in inverse order of their consolidated standings at the end of the regular season. Here is the draft order that is already set in stone for the remainder of the first round: 15. Detroit (39-43) 16. Chicago (41-41) 17. Philadelphia (41-41) 18. Miami (To Minnesota) (43-39) 19. Atlanta (47-35) 20. Utah (48-34) 21. New Orleans (49-33) 22. Dallas (50-32) 23. Houston (To Sacramento) (53-29) 24. Portland (54-28) 25. San Antonio (To Oklahoma City) (54-28) 26. Denver (To Chicago via Oklahoma City) (54-28) 27. Orlando (To Memphis) (59-23) 28. Boston (To Minnesota) (62-20) 29. LA Lakers (65-17) 30. Cleveland (66-16).

Second Round Draft Choice Order – 31. Sacramento 32/33. LA Clippers (To Portland) 32/33. Washington 34. Oklahoma City (To Denver) 35/36. Memphis 35/36. Minnesota (To Detroit) 37. Golden State (To San Antonio via Phoenix) 38. New York (To Portland via Chicago) 39. Toronto (To Detroit) 40/41. New Jersey (To Charlotte via Oklahoma City) 40/41. Milwaukee 42. Charlotte (To LA Lakers) 43. Indiana (To Miami) 44. Detroit 45. Philadelphia (To Minnesota via Miami) 46. Chicago (To Cleveland) 47. Miami (To Minnesota) 48. Phoenix 49. Atlanta 50. Utah 51. New Orleans (To San Antonio via Toronto) 52. Dallas (To Indiana) 53. Houston (To San Antonio) 54. San Antonio (To Charlotte) 55. Denver (To Portland) 56. Portland 57. Orlando (To Phoenix via Oklahoma City) 58. Boston 59. LA Lakers 60. Cleveland (To Miami). Because of ties between the Clippers and Wizards, Grizzlies and Timberwolves, and Nets and Bucks, their second round draft position will be one of the two choices listed above. Which ever of the tied teams the lottery decides will select first in round one will select second in round two.

Winning the right to pick No. 1 provides the worst teams in the NBA with the best opportunity to start putting a winner on the floor. Just ask the Orlando Magic and the Cleveland Cavaliers, who would not find themselves in the Eastern Conference Finals had they not been able to draft Dwight Howard and LeBron James with the first overall pick.
