Offense – The Oklahoma State Cowboys put 40.8 points per game up on the scoreboard in 2008 (9th nationally) and racked up 487.7 yards of total offense per contest (8th nationally). The Cowboys return seven key offensive starters from last year’s squad and figure to be even better offensively in 2009. The offense is led by senior quarterback Zac Robinson who will be taking snaps as the starter for a third straight season. Robinson finished the 2008 season with 3,064 yards and 25 touchdowns through the air against only 10 interceptions. He has also shown the ability to make plays with his legs. His go-to guy is wide receiver Dez Bryant, who caught 87 passes for 1,480 yards and a ridiculous 19 touchdowns last season. His 1,480 yards were tops in the league and second nationally. The Oklahoma State running game ranked eighth nationally in 2008, averaging 245.5 yards per game, behind star tailback Kendall Hunter. Hunter racked up 1,555 yards and 16 scores on the ground last season. The offensive line should be strong as well behind NFL prospect Russell Okung at left tackle and third-year starting center Andrew Lewis.

Defense – If the Cowboys hope to break through as Big 12 champs, they’ll have to be better on this side of the football. The Boys gave up 28.1 points per game (76th nationally) and 405.5 yards per game (93rd nationally). They were especially torched through the air, ranking 109th in the country while allowing 267.7 yards per game. The defensive line will be critical to Oklahoma State’s success. The Cowboys weren’t able to mount much of a pass rush last season, coming up with just 15 sacks in 13 games (107th nationally). The biggest change up front has been moving Derek Burton to tackle from end to utilize his speed against slower interior offensive lineman. The linebacker unit appears loaded with all three starters back, and all three are seniors. The best linebacker unit OSU has seen in years is led by Andre Sexton, who finished the 2008 season with 100 stops. The secondary still looks like a weak link after the unit lost four of its top five players. Cornerback Perrish Cox is the only returning starter across the back.

Prediction: 3rd Big 12 South – There will be plenty of excitement in Stillwater this season with the Cowboys coming off a nine-win campaign. There are still some holes on the defensive side of the football which will likely keep OSU from a South Division title, but an overall favorable schedule and a top notch offense could make this season one of the best in the history of the program. Oklahoma State is listed at +600 to win the Big 12 South Division at BetUS.
