2009 Quail Hollow Championship Betting Odds
Last week Jerry Kelly grabbed the 3rd win of his career at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, defeating a trio of golfers by just one shot. This week the PGA Tour heads to Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina for the 2009 Quail Hollow Championship. The tournament has been played in since 2003, and until this year was called the Wachovia Championship. In 2008 Anothony Kim was the runaway winner shooting 16 under and finishing 5 shots better than runner-up Ben Curtis. This year the 2007 winner Tiger Woods will take part in the fun, as Woods makes his first start since the Masters. Woods isn’t the only big name in the field this weekend, as a number of golfers make their way back on Tour after a short break after the Masters. With the tournament just a couple days away here is a quick breakdown of the field into the favorites, guys in the middle of the pack, and the longs shots I think have a shot at winning this thing.
Favorites: Tiger Woods +275. Phil Mickelson +1000, and Geoff Ogilvy +1500
Woods missed this event last year because of his knee troubles, so he will look to rightly defend his 2007 title this year. Considering the time Woods spent away from the game, I am extremely impressed with the way he has played so far in 2009. Woods hasn’t finished outside the top 10 in 13 consecutive starts, so he is definitely the man to beat. Both Ogilvy and Mickelson have both faired well here at Quail Hollow, as Ogilvy has never finished outside the top 25 and Mickelson has 3 top 10 showings in five starts. All three are strong candidates and safe picks to win this event, but Woods is the clear cut favorite and will likely be the best out of this group. Hopefully both Tiger and Phil come to play this weekend, and maybe we get another dual between the two best golfers of today.
Middle of the Pack: Anthony Kim +2000, Jim Furyk +2000, Sergio Garcia +2500, Padraigh Harrington +2500, Rory Sabbatini +3000, Hunter Mahan +3000
A lot of solid golfers in this group, as you get defending champion Kim and 2006 winner Furyk. For Kim it will be his first ever title defense, so its hard telling what to expect, but he does have a 5th place finish and win in his two starts at Quail Hollow. Furyk also has a good track record here, as he has finished in the top 10 three times in five starts. The rest of this group has plenty potential, as we all know the games of Garcia and Harrington, but neither has done much on the PGA Tour in 2009. Besides Kim and Furyk, I like Sabbatini to continue his strong play from a week ago where he finished tied for 2nd at the Zurich Classic.
Long Shots: Camilo Villegas +4000, Vijay Singh +4000, Sean O’Hair +4000, Retief Goosen +4000, Nick Watney +4000, Stewart Cink +5000, David Toms +5000, Charles Howell III +5000, Adam Scott +5000, and Angel Cabrera +6000
Its hard telling which of these golfers will come with their swing in tact this weekend. Singh won this think back in 2005, but that was a long time ago, as he continues to battle injuries. Toms was the first ever winner here at Quail Creek back in 2003, but has been hit or miss ever since. The guys I like out of this group are O’Hair, Watney, and Howell III, but I will also be keeping a close eye on 2009 Masters Champion Angel Cabrera.
