2009 SEC Football Predictions
Here is my rundown on how I see the SEC shaping up this fall. If you would like to read my full report on each team, be sure to check out my NCAA football betting articles archive. And also, be sure to take advantage of our special $500 match bonus at BetUS!
SEC East – 1st Place: Florida Gators – All 11 starters return from a defense which led the SEC in scoring defense (12.9 points per game allowed) and helped Florida bring home a national title. Oh yeah, and there’s this guy named Tim Tebow leading the offense. Maybe you’ve heard of him. Florida is listed at -300 to win the SEC.
2nd Place – Georgia Bulldogs – Without Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno, I don’t expect the Dawgs to challenge the Gators this season, especially since they didn’t give them a challenge in 2008 (10-49 loss). Georgia is listed at +1200 to win the SEC.
3rd Place: Tennessee Volunteers - The defense, led by star safety Eric Berry, will keep the Vols competitive in Lane Kiffin’s first season. Tennessee should be back bowling in 2009. Tennessee is listed at +1700 to win the SEC.
4th Place: Vanderbilt Commodores – The Dores are coming off their first winning season in more than two decades, but a difficult schedule will likely keep Vandy from a repeat performance. Vandy is listed at +5000 to win the SEC.
5th Place: South Carolina Gamecocks – Spurrier has a tremendous career coaching record of 170-62-2, but he is just 28-22 in four seasons at South Carolina. The defense won’t be as good as it was last season and the offense just hasn’t been as good as expected from a Spurrier-led team. South Carolina is listed at +1700 to win the SEC.
6th Place: Kentucky Wildcats – The Cats have accepted three straight bowl bids under head coach Rich Brooks, but earning a fourth straight will be a major feat. The offense may improve on last year’s down numbers but likely not enough to do much of any damage in the tough SEC East. Kentucky is listed at +5000 to win the SEC.
SEC West – 1st Place: Alabama Crimson Tide – The Crimson Tide finished the regular season a perfect 12-0 in 2008, but fell short of an overall SEC title when they lost to Florida in the league championship game. The nation’s third-ranked total defense brings back nine starters and will be gunning for a showdown with the Gators in the SEC title game again this season. Bama is listed at +375 to win the SEC.
2nd Place: Ole Miss Rebels – The Rebels handed Florida its only loss last season and they won their final six games to finish with a 9-4 mark. With Florida not on their schedule and with Alabama at home, don’t put it past the Rebs to win the West. Ole Miss is listed at +675 to win the SEC.
3rd Place: LSU Tigers – The Tigers should be better than they were a season ago when they went 8-5 and had a losing mark in league play. But reclaiming the SEC West title appears to be a difficult task as LSU must play division foes Alabama and Ole Miss away from Baton Rouge. LSU is listed at +350 to win the SEC.
4th Place: Arkansas Razorbacks – The Hogs will be improved offensively under Michigan transfer QB Ryan Mallet, but a defense which ranked last in the league in total yards allowed, points allowed, and rushing yards allowed in 2008 will continue to hold them back this season. Arkansas is listed at +1700 to win the SEC.
5th Place: Auburn Tigers – The Tigers finished with a losing record in SEC play for the first time since 1999 last year and another tough season lies ahead as the players must adjust to new head coach Gene Chizik. Auburn is listed at +1700 to win the SEC.
6th Place: Mississippi State Bulldogs – Plain and simple, the Mississippi State offense lacks the fire power to compete with the elite teams in this conference (just 15.3 points per game last season). Dan Mullen appears to be a good hire but year one figures to be rough. Mississippi State is listed at +5000 to win the SEC.
